So we managed to meet David for dinner tonight. He's given the go ahead to post an update on his status, some of which I've mentioned yesterday.
* David's been in a sustained crunch mode for quite some time. He doesn't have any time at all to visit the forums, hence his extended absence. * David is currently working on the next Safehold book, At the Sound of Triumph. Word count will probably hit 300,000. He anticipates completing the first draft in a couple weeks. If he can, it is possible, albeit unlikely that Tor can get the book out in time for the holidays. Snippets should begin shortly after he finishes, but is subject to change. * David's current writing schedule looks like AtSoT, then a heavy modification of Shadow of Victory (should remain on track for its release date), then help on the next Travis Long book, then the next Sword of the South. * Media rights should have reverted back to David, but no TV or movie project is being planned at this time. -------------------------

David really should look into the recent deal that Patrick Rothfuss signed. Rothfuss has what may be, at most, a 4-5 book series that has decent writing. And he landed a multi-platform media deal (with a studio like Lionsgate!). Someone with the universe that Weber has created here should be able to negotiate a mega-deal with a major studio for a multi platform creation.
Just talking here, but look at Game of Thrones and Marvel as an example. With the right studio, Weber could have a 10-season tv show with a blockbuster movie every 2 years dealing with a 'high point' of the series. And the ability to create spin-offs (Beautiful Friendship, Manticore Rising, 'Adventures of Cachet and Zilwicki', etc...) would entice any studio. Basically - Hollywood is screaming for original content they can put their writer-slaves to work turning into film - Weber has that original content that is highly appealing. |

I would like a good TV series or some movies for Cinema, but there is a big Problem: "The big Studios fears science fiction like the devil the holy water!" If they want to make a good scifi movie/TV series, they have to spend a lot of money to create the world and all the special effects. It´s a lot of risk. It is a very hard work to convince a studio to spend hundreds of million Dollar into such a Project. |

While it would be nice if RFC got a nice TV deal such as GRRM got, I sincerely hope that he does not follow either GRRM's or Patrick Rothfus's writing habits - if he did, we would probably die of old age before we saw the next book in any of his series. Personally, I don't watch broadcast TV so I would rather get a book than a TV show. Also, a TV show or movie series would just suck up his time so it would be even longer between books (Hello GRRM!) --
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. |

Thanks, Duckk, for the update. Our experience with TOR is 12-18 month minimum delay after first draft submission, but they have sped things up to 4 to 9 months for David once before. Hopefully, with an existing series they might work to make it happen again.

Very happy to hear that there is a decent chance for our drug of choice, SNIPPETS! I also hope that, as happened before with the delayed submission of MTaT, himself will not have a repeat experience with a Macmillan/TOR's ad hoc 'copy editor'. I know he said that he would never work with her again but even he admitted that it was the circumstances of being delayed that forced them to make the assignment of someone other than his regular copy editor. -----

"the holidays" in the US is the period between Thanksgiving (third Thurs in Nov.) and New Year's Day. (sometimes stretched to Twelfth night.) Presumably this coming Holiday season -- Nov 25-ish, 2016 through Jan 1, 2017. .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |

Err... Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday, not 3rd! If Mr Weber can get the clean manuscript in to TOR by, say, end of August, we could have a happy and merry Christmas. -----
