Well,... for me the book series started with the Gbaba kicking Earth's ass. And if I recall, the Gbaba tech was not that more advanced than Earth's tech was. I think I remember it being said that if Earth only had a few more decades of tech development, they might have beaten the Gbaba. Hmmm... it's been a while since I read that first book.....
For me, the series would come to a good end when they have not just recovered the technology they lost but developed way beyond creating the technology they would need to destroy the Gbaba should they ever meet again. The thing is, they travelled so far from Earth to set up Safehold, they may have travelled far enough that they may never run into the Gbaba again. But then again, they don't have any idea where the Gbaba came from, why they attacked, how they found the other colonies. All those questions would have the whole planet living in fear all their lives. The only way to get out from under that fear is to go out and meet it. And in that meeting destroy the Gbaba, get some answers, establish some understanding of what happened. So,... Safehold would have to develop the tech to send off 2 or 3 colony ships that would go even deeper into space, way deeper. And then move forward, back toward Earth, in strength enough that they can win the battles with out falling back to Safehold and giving it's position away. Once they go forward, they can't come back unless they win. (or have figured out how to hide) The fall of the church and the beginning of the recovery of technology would be a good end to this ark. Will RFC ever continue the story to where Earth is reclaimed and the Gbaba held at bay or destroyed? Who knows! I just first want to see an end to this ark. -
- I think therefore I am.... I think |

I don't think telling the rest if the story has to take as long as all that. Next book is # 9 with the overthrow of the COGA's political power along with the inquisition's power to coerce. Have # 10 and # 11 be the final war against reaction on Safehold along with recovery of tf tech. Use # 12 to tie the ribbons on it with the campaign against the Gbaba and the series is done. IIRC, Safehold was originally planned for 12 volumnes. So my speculation would end things on schedule. I love Mr Weber's books and it bugs me when people complain that a book hasn't 'moved the story forward".
But that said, he doesn't rush to complete a series. In fact he hasn't finished any series I am aware of. So I doubt Safehold will be finished in 3 or 4 books. My only fear is that as he ages, and we all do. (I think I'm a bit older) he will tire of the whole writing thing and leave the completion to someone else. |

I think the Honor Harrington series has this upcoming book, maybe one more, and it is done. I have actually read the new one is the last, and also seen that there is one more to come. |

don't the fifth empire (Dahk) and Fury books class as completed series.
i know there is talk of doing more with both but as it currently stands there is nothing forthcoming for them and both were left at points where while we would love more, more is not needed. |

RFC writes as if he is telling history. His stories are so engaging because they capture more than any other writer the full scope of history. History never ends and so ending his stories are equally difficult.

No, on the Dahk series, because the Actuani haven't been defeated yet. The Path of the Fury could be considered a one book deal. They could also work on Empire of Man also. |

The only way I could see RFC finishing a series, would be for something like prolong to be invented... maybe |

Let me delurk to note a couple of things about the Gbaba story arc, in case they haven't been noted already.
1. Iirc, RFC noted that the Gbaba have a motivation; we just don't know it yet. I suspect that part of the Gbaba story arc will be finding out that motivation, and using that information as part of the strategy to remove the Gbaba threat of genocide. In other words, you don't necessarily have to wipe out the Gbaba in order to defeat them. 2. If I'm reading correctly, some commenters are taking RFC's little story of beating the Gbaba as one possible way things could eventually play out. While certainly "bringing all the series together" is a long authorial tradition (e.g., Asimov spent most of his last years tying together all his sf story lines), I read it more as a "Down In Flames" type of story (from the title of the first of such efforts, by Larry Niven, in which he basically wipes out everyone in the Protector Universe as a bit of snark). I really don't think having three or four dei ex machina come in at the last minute is at all RFC's style. Finally, I haven't seen any commentary recently of how exactly they are going to take out that threat overhead. I can see a couple of possibilities: (a) find something in the Temple that can turn it off, so Merlin can get access; (b) failing that, eliminate any opposite-side sensors and build and deploy rockets/warships when the threat is on the opposite side of the planet. Either way, a Wylsynn really needs to get into the Temple so Merlin or Nimue can make sure it's harmless (e.g., the Temple doesn't have opposite-side sensors of its own).

Anyone who has that opinion is ignoring the Title of that bit of "fan fiction by the author: "How The Safehold Series Will NOT End." .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |
