I think it depends on the astrography. We don't know where any of the 11 RF planets are, other than a strong suspicion that Visigoth is 60 ly on the other side of Beowulf from Earth.

If this is a relatively compact cluster, especially with the Streak Drive, then they'll become a multi-system polity, probably with 50 to 100 or maybe more systems. Pretty big as such things go, but there's going to be a lot of unconsolidated systems on the other side of Sol, especially with their position between the Haven Sector and the rest of the League.

If they're scattered all over the place, then they may not even manage to consolidate as a single star nation, but may become several star nations.

Now, I don't think the first is correct, simply because of the way the MAlign created them by "seeding" families among the early settlers, giving them a lot of clandestine help here and there, and seeing which of them survived. Not all of them did; the 11 we have is what was left after Murphy got done with the stew.

So my answer is that they're not going to jell well enough to become a major factor in the future.

Depends on how much the GA knows and how careful the RF is.

If the GA finds out about the RF or even begins to suspect what that part of the plan consists of then it might get interesting for most of the RF members.

But it would also depend on how they react to the breakup of the League. If they jump a little to fast and seem a little to prepared they might make the GA suspicious.

With a bit of luck and careful movement the RF could become a major power as long as they don't move against the GA in any way.

Yeah unless the GA completely abandons the Harrington plan or the RF worlds do incredibly stupid things like attack the GA directly the GA can't attack them.

Actually, part of the Harrington Doctrine will eventually bring the RF and GA into direct conflict -- bi-lateral mutual defense treaties.

The RF is intended to eventually replace the Solarian League with a single, universal human government; by offering "safety in numbers" to entice voluntary joining at first, but becoming conquistador as voluntary participation drops off. Eventually, the RF is going to be "OFS on Steroids" and come into conflict with some system that has a treaty with the GA or the GA directly. The RF is going to be a huge entity by the time it does confront the GA (or whatever the GA evolves into).

Like the Cold War, the conflict is going to be a lot of little brush-fire wars for a long time before it becomes a universal war.

No, they will happily sign a mutual defense treaty with the GA. And take their tech.

I'd like to say you are paranoid but this seems all to likely.

This.

The RF will have to adjust their plans some sure but thinking they are incapable of adapting to their new situation is ludicrous.

Depends heavily on if the GA finds out about what their role was supposed to be in the Mesan Alignment plans. If they where found out the range of response goes from the GA making it clear they are being watched. Up to removing the alpha lines from the leadership of thous worlds by what ever means necessary.

It is possible that the Alignment could retreat to Darius and hold the "secret" wormhole network still secet. The big challange to that is Mannerheim and a significant number of it's navy knowing about both the wormhole they are attempting acquire the system of and that the navy is providing (so far) the guard force covering the other end of the Torch wormhole.

Should Darus and the various clandestine wormhole knowledge be kept secret, the RF might become the infection vector it is designed as to bring the Alignment's principlas into mainstream government and health practics in the known universe. They don't have to attack the GA, they just have to avoid setting up a confrontation. No anti-slavery problems there.

Of course, that presumes that the Alignment is both successful in eradicating the trails and information about the people of Houdini plus all connections with the RF and at least Mannheim is able to contain the information about it's hoped for aquistion of the secret wormhole.
We shall see.

Yes, that is the question, and that depends on the resolution which RFC wants in the final book of the series.

Not finding and neutralizing Darius would mean that the Detweiller class SDs would be free to wreak havoc all over the place. I don't see the MAlign pulling in its horns enough to decide not to use them if they have them available.

If RFC decides to leave Darius, the RA and the MAlign in place after the series concludes with A Whiff of Honor (a title I just invented), I suspect you'll hear the outrage from the fans from here to Aldebaran.

That would be pretty cool. Leaving them in place, that is. I'd like that. It always makes for better stories when you start out with enemies that are very clever.

IMO Darius, and the RF has to be destroyed in the last book.

He could leave one of the clones and one of the RF worlds in place to start the series up again in a few years (or not)
