"As He died to make men holy, let us fight to make men free" OK, who died? and how did he make men holy?"

The original lyrics by Julia Ward Howe and what I learned in elementary school 65+ years ago were: "As he died to make men holy, let us DIE to make men free..."

I think it was in the 60s, the concept of dying for freedom was too traumatic for children, so "die" was changed to live.

Presumably the He is who was mentioned in the first verse... Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

Kind of funky wording... mine eyes but... what the heck

Actually, for the hymn, I'm quite aware of that.

The question was asked in the context of using these verses as titles for Safehold books. Christ doesn't figure in those, nor will He, so who and what might they usefully refer to? People were throwing out their favourite hymn extracts, without bothering to think about their significance in the context of the book itself. Something that it's pretty clear Himself _has_ been doing.

Louis R - The previous two lines to the one quoted are:
"In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me."

So the answer to your question is actually in the previous two lines.

I like that "more twists than a pretzel factory"... I have been saying "a plate of spaghetti or a multi term congressman" but no one seem to believe that spaghetti is twisty

I remember reading in a book years ago (can't remember the title) ". . . more twists and turns than a nest of cobras . . ."

Why nobody took into account the fact that Zhaspahr Clyntahn could be the dead?
Actually being Grand Inquisitor he would be martyr, and his dead (or some divine action) would inaugurate a massive attack that could save the temple or freeze the war for 20 yr.

Though really, that's been the theme of the whole series, hasn't it?

And it's got a wonderful, rolling tune "Ton y Botel" which has a great, striding "pedal" line for the organist.

I had thought of that and hope that he strokes out at the at the annual address to the vicars. It would be FANTASTIC if he said something like... If I am not telling the truth may God strike me dead :twisted:
I guess this shows the difference between David and me... I am sure he has some other plan in mind.
