I hope RFC's priorities have him getting large doses of his three teenage children's lives. And I hope his best bud is having to shoo him back to his author's den. The next time you start to whine about RFC's publishing schedule, or even think about whining, go to the nearest mirror and tell yourself to "get a life" at least three times.
Of course I can say that cuz I just got my third grandson. :) :)

EdThomas,
I concur... our children grow too quickly for the opportunities to be missed.
Having said that... I am starting to feel like a junkie standing on the corner looking for a connection so I can get my next fix <grin>

Soo, thats what, 5 months without even logging on to his own forums?

Did they get new forums somewhere else that I'm unaware of?

No, but he has, per people who should know, been fairly busy between writing (he's got Safehold, Honorverse plus Honorverse spinoffs, Norfressa, Multiverse, and IIRC two more contracted books in Into the Dark) and real life concerns other than writing.

The forum, when you get right down to it, is a fairly low priority for his time. Personally, if it's a choice between spending time writing his books and spending time on the forums, as nice for us as some forum time would be, writing the books is clearly more important.

Coincidentally, I started rereading one of David's other works last night. I typically jump back and forth between books I've already read. A chapter here, a couple sections there...

So in any case, in the foreword to "Oath of Swords and Sword Brother" (Bahzell series), David states: "I'm a production writer, and I produce somewhere around two million words a year. That's a lot of time in front of the keyboard (well, wearing the voice-activated headset, in my own case)..."

Two million words a year...

Think about that for a minute. 5,479 words per day. Every... single... day. And if he takes a day off (either willingly to attend a family event, a CON, or the like) or unwillingly (illness??) then the average has to go up.

Now 5,479 words may not sound like a whole bunch, but when those words have to align with words that were written previously, the complexity - and therefore the required thought and effort - go up exponentially.

Like most on these forums, I wish David WOULD spend more time with us. But I think that - given the choice between the two options - I would much rather have David spend his time creating his stories for our enjoyment instead of spending his time reading and responding to our posts.

Cheers!

Ah well... at least the forums related to David's work are jumping with activity... I went over to another site that I had been active on and found a ghost town... all tumble weeds and spider webs where there was once a vibrant fan community... :( ... and we expect to see fresh material before this year is out...

The thing that has me in constant awe of David's work is the way characters appear in different books... with more maturity... I have pointed to the example of Hector in the Safehold books... Do you think that David foresaw him being married to Iris when he introduces the nervous midshipman or even when he stood back to back with his king fighting overwhelming odds??

I have a hard time trying to figure out how to get my characters to the point that I want them at without giving the plot more twists than a plate of spaghetti or a multi term congressman ;)

I think that output has dropped somewhat since that was written, for a variety of reasons. One of them being that he isn't dropping a half-million a year in the fora ;)

Himself has made it clear that he does enjoy interaction here. But he's also said that he's kind of like the proverbial alcoholic: he can't reply to just one. So, he stays away unless he knows he has a substantial block of open time. Which hasn't happened a lot lately.

RFC will do what he likes, quite rightly, but it clearly is not a simple either/or between posting and writing, or posting and spending time with his family, certainly not as far as snippets are concerned. He could easily revert to his former practice of getting someone else to post snippets for him and avoid both of those dichotomies. He chooses not to do so.

Of course, he may not have anything snippet-able right now; if the new honorverse book isn't coming out till last week of October or first of November it's too early to start the snippets. (Do the Honorverse books even get snippeted?)

I'll be placing my order for a hard bound of Shadows of Victory before the weekend is over (hoping that Amazon will offer a discount for Kindle version as some have reported they did for the last release)but... I intend to avoid any Snippets... While I have been vociferous in expressing my impatience (like a junkie hanging out on the street corner) I have also said that I find the snippets as frustrating as a fan dancers performance.
