the official line is that FTL transmitters/seeing grav footprints, etc., is due to interaction with the Alpha wall, IIRC.

While that would obviously be the strongest result, wouldn't there be 'harmonics' (as an analogy) off beta and higher walls?

If not, why on earth not?

If so, you should be able to detect and use them.

You can't see the Beta (or higher) walls from normal space.

and depending on hyperspace physics, FTL communications might or might not work there. I hyperspace there is between 12-100 sub bands inside each main band.

If grav pulses bounce off of the sub band, than FTL communications would only be about 1% faster than light-speed communications. In other words, not worth it.

If, on the other hand, grav pulses bounce off the next higher main band, than FTL communications in a grave wave could be utilized. For example, In the alpha band they may bounce off of the beta band which is 767 times normal space light speed. If a ship was in the bottom sub band, FTL communications would be 767/62=12.37 times faster. if the ship was near the top of the alpha bands, again we are looking at about 1% faster.

The actual answer to this question would have to be settled by RFC, and as it is unlikely to come up in a story I doubt will ever be solved, not that I am worrying about it.
