none of the publishers actually print their own books.

it all gets outsourced to something like 3 or 4 big printers. last report is that Baen uses Quebecor, but that could have been changed. key point is that the last book that particular press printed could have been from Tor, and the next one could as easily be from Daw or Ace.

The use S&S's credit line to pay for the publication. The Gingrich book disaster years ago reduced their maneuvering room, and all the personal connection Jim Baen built don't transfer to Toni. They do very cool things and are allowed to do a lot of "odd things" as long as they make money, but they exist due to S&S credit lines.

I think this misses the point. It's all well and good for those "in the know" to make personal adjustments for what they consider authoritative, but how does that help people who are completely new to the verse? For example, I didn't say the wiki is authoritative, but I think you can pretty easily see how newbies could believe it's authoritative.

The Honorverse is pretty big. I think it would help promote sales if there was a definitive guide for newbies to follow.

If you don't read everything, you're missing a whole lot. Like four Honor Harrington stories that precede On Basilisk Station as well as a two general background articles.

Anything that chops it up into four pieces isn't good for new readers. Although it might be less intimidating.
The trouble that is many people won't read all the ancillary books. Think of it like all the people who never watch the 'bonus extras' that come with virtually every DVD and Blu Ray movie disc. If I understand correctly, only a small percentage of people watch ever them.

I think it's important to consider and make accommodations for this type of reader. They may never be hard core HH fans, but their money is as good as anyone else's. Not only that, but I think they are entitled to read the series in whatever manner they choose. Having a definitive list of the books in the main HH stream would assist them I believe.

Oink, all I can tell you is the Wiki is a Wiki - built by some readers and the data in it is their interpretation of the books, and while most is correct, a fair % of the data in it is inaccurate or wrong based on the books and what David has said in side info dumps.

The closest thing to an official Honorverse data source is Compendium #1, House of Steel. There will be 2 more, but the data in the 1st one is only as complete as David and BuNine wanted to give us - which is considerably less than we wanted. Beyond that - read all the books, anthologies and side stories. Read the Free Short Stories at Baen's Free Library and Honorverse Details at Baen's FAQ link, backread this Forumn and the one at Baen's Bar. Read the collected Pearls of Wisdom from David at The Fifth Imperium website. Read the background & ship details in the Saganami Island Tactical Simulator game and it's Shipbooks, and finally read the 2 Jayne's Intelligence Reviews.

Does anyone know if Baen will release an EARC of Shadow of Victory?

ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) are typically limited editions given away to people in the publishing industry who can influence buying the book. A lot of them wound up on E-bay and fetched quite high prices. I think Baen eventually noticed and began the e-arc practice to cash in on fan's wanting to get their hands on the book early, even if it hadn't been edited yet.

I can't imagine them not issuing one - it's got to be a small cash cow.

I'd love to know how many E-arcs David sells for an Honorverse book - something tells me it is in the thousands - So at the low end, it is probably $40,000 easy cash Baen gets to split with David; Being the Honorverse, it could also easily be in the $200,000 range (for 10,000 sales).

Some of the information in House of Steel is wrong. Like who Samantha adopted in the book HAE Samantha's person is Henry ' Harry' Tschu but in HoS it's George Tschu. Or Dianchet name is a Celtic God of healing but he's a Greek God of the Hunt (actually Artimis) in HoS and he is stated to be just over 30 T-years old when WPD he's stated as being 47.5 T-years old. There are more examples but you get the point.
