With the recent upsurge in major earthquakes the past two weeks, it's very possible the Earth is trying to do something right now, maybe even the possible magnetic field flip.
I'm not much of a geologist but something is happening and I don't particularly like how many nuclear related 'accidents' are happening in response to the greater seismic activity
I have had some geological training. We still do not full understand how the easrth magnetic field is created or all the interactions it has both on and off the earth. However magnetic reversals do not happen overnight, they are exceptionally quick by geological standards (30 years to 1000 years are estimated) but you would not find all the worlds compasses pointing the other way one morning (most likely they would go through a phase of pointing in multiple directions or loosing focus completely before resettling again - and even then the process would take decades if not centuries).
Also I do not believe there has been any demonstrated connection between tectonic activity and geo-magnetic reversals. Most of the recent tectonic activity of the last few months has been on the Pacific plate which is one of the most active on earth anyway. It is hard to measure but any change or release in stress (i.e. an earthquake) at one point on the earth will change the conditions somewhere else. I haven't been reading much on it but two major quakes happened on opposite sides of Pacific, and it is possible there was some relation between them.
