Ringo's "Let's go to Prague" is fun and well written, but has no impact on anything else nor does it describe anything that you will run into elsewhere.

Whereas I Will Build My House of Steel in House of Steel does both. It's also a really great story.

The anthologies and short stories don't advance the main storyline but do add depth and color to the universe and are well worth reading. I have tagged them with a letter, for example 7 is a main book, 7A is an anthology and could be temporarily skipped if your wife is waving the butcher knife in the background :)

1. On Basilisk Station (Apr 1992)
2. Honor of the Queen (June 1993)
3. The Short Victorious War (Apr 1994)
4. Field of Dishonor (Dec 1994)
5. Flag In Exile (Sep 1995)
6. Honor Among Enemies (Feb 1996)
7. In Enemy Hands (Jul 1997)
7A. More Than Honor (Jan 1998) (Anthology)
8. Echoes of Honor (Oct 1998)
8A. Worlds of Honor (Feb 1999) (Anthology)
9. Ashes of Victory (Mar 2000)
9A. Changer of Worlds (Mar 2001) (Anthology)
10. War of Honor (Oct 2002)
10A. The Service of the Sword (Apr 2003) (Anthology)
11. Crown of Slaves (Sep 2003)
12. The Shadow of Saganami (Oct 2004)
13. At All Costs (Nov 2005)
14. Storm from the Shadows (Mar 2009)
15. Torch of Freedom (Nov 2009)
16. Mission of Honor (June 2010)
16A. In Fire Forged (Feb 2011) (Anthology)
16B. Honorverse Tech Bu9 (Oct 2011) in the Baen Free Short Stories 2011 collection.
17. A Rising Thunder (Mar 2012)
18. Shadow of Freedom (Mar 2013)
18A. House of Steel (May 2013) (Compendium)
18B. Grayson Navy Letters Home (2012) in the Baen Free Short Stories 2012 collection.
18C. Beginnings (July 2013) (Anthology)
19. Cauldron of Ghosts (Apr 2014)
20. Shadow of Victory (forthcoming Nov 2016)

The Star Kingdom series, can be read separately: (Stephanie Harrington & treecats)
1. A Beautiful Friendship (Oct 2011)
2. Fire Season (Oct 2012)
3. Treecat Wars (Oct 2013)

The Manticore Ascendant series, can be read seperatly: (very early RMN)
0. A Call to Arms in the Beginnings anthology (July 2013)
1. A Call to Duty (Oct 2014)
2. A Call to Arms (Oct 2015)
3. A third book is in the works, no idea as to title yet.

Dates in parenthesis are the date the books were (or are scheduled to be) published.

I would say all anthologies can be skipped other than, "Service of the Sword". Especially the first anthology book. Though the Honorverse background in it is quite a good read to flesh out the universe.

I disagree to some extent; while most of the stories (especially those that take place before _On Basilisk Station_) are not important, IMHO, the following are important in the overall series plotline:

1) "Changer of Worlds" (_CoW_)
2) "A Whiff of Grapeshot" (_MtH_)
3) "Nightfall" (_CoW_)
4) "From the Highlands" (_CoW_)
5) "Fanatic"(_SoS_)
6) "The Service of the Sword" (_SoS_)

where _MtH_ = More than Honor
_CoW_ = Changer of Worlds
_SoS_ = The Service of the Sword

Let's go to Prague does mention Honor's capture so there is a tie-in, slight but there all the same.

That is true, but it isn't in the directory of stories that I ripped out of the anthologies so I could easily find them on my iPad that I was looking at. Let's Go to Prague is there.

1) Completely covered in the books. Nice story tho
2) 100% covered in the books
3) Same goes here
4) Nice story, but covered in SoSag WoH etc.
5) First real story required to understand CoS
6) Partially required but not really as Abigail is not a central character.

Have you ever wondered about the important dates in the Honorverse? Or where the books actually happened?

I love David Weber's work, I have read all the Safehold books about 5 times each, I have read the Empire of Man books 2-3 times each, Shiva option, etc... Heck, I even loved Out of the Dark.

That said, I have never read the HH series. I think part of it was the sheer number of books. Not just the main series, but all the spin off series as well.

Well, I finally gave in, I just ordered all 13 of the HH books. Wish me luck, and pray the wife doesn't kill me.
