I love David Weber's work, I have read all the Safehold books about 5 times each, I have read the Empire of Man books 2-3 times each, Shiva option, etc... Heck, I even loved Out of the Dark.

That said, I have never read the HH series. I think part of it was the sheer number of books. Not just the main series, but all the spin off series as well.

Well, I finally gave in, I just ordered all 13 of the HH books. Wish me luck, and pray the wife doesn't kill me.

It's important to read EVERYTHING in order of publication. That includes the short stories and compendium (The Manticore Ascendant and Stephanie Harrington novels are set in another time period and can be read outside the main publication order, but in series pub order.) Everything ties together or, in some cases, runs concurrent, so reading an anthology out of order will leave you scratching your head trying to figure out who some characters are when they suddenly become Mainstream with a backstory.

Well, stories in anthologies by authors who aren't coauthors of any full novels can mostly be skipped and read whenever or not at all. As can short stories outside the main timeline (anything pre-1850 PD or so).

Not necessarily, the short story Changer of Worlds can be read before reading In Enemy Hands.

Yes, but you cannot wait until the end of the series to read it.

Unless we were to write a list of when each story and short story happened and which order they should be read in (or ignored in), it's hard to guide someone without just saying: "read in pub order."
