ATC lasts 6 T-months unknown on class slots.

kaplan was sent back to manticore for treatment after the fight at monica and it was implied that the repairs to hexapuma and warlock to make it back to manticore for full repair (or more likely scrapping in warlocks case) were time consuming.

still i'm getting the impression that she did her ATC time before taking up her duties as Hexapuma's tac offier

A question is it expected that someone gets a command after the crusher or is merely a necessary step on the path to command?

What about this scenario the Tristram get damaged enough in battle that it requires the type of repairs that can only be done in the home system. Abigail is given command for the return journey to Manticore as a reward for her actions the battle. Her superiors in the original chain of command where wounded enough to be transferred off ship for medical care as it will take the Tristram months to get back home. It will add a nice note on her record as having commanded a destroyer even if it a safe as a assignment that can be had.

It's merely a requirement of command, the Crusher is the similar to middy cruise's. A middy cruise is considered the true 'final exam' for students of the naval academy, they're already going to pass as students, but they have to 'pass' their middy cruise if they expect to actually receive warrants and become officers in the navy.

Likewise, the Crusher is the final 'test' of officers who wish to receive a command of their own. Until they pass the Crusher, they can be XO's, or a staff officer, but they will never be a Captain, commanding officer. If they fail the Crusher, they will generally be kept in the service, but they'll never receive that coveted position. I think they're even pulled entirely out of 'line' positions, to be exclusively staff officers if they fail the Crusher.

I guess that makes it possible that Kaplan took the Crusher before the Hexapuma cruise, not during her medical convalescence.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

I suspect that in theory it is only a necessary step but that in practice, due to limited slots in the course, most people only get assigned as an immediate prelude to assuming command (presuming they pass).

But there are probably some promising minority who are assigned to (and pass) the crusher even though they are destined for at least one more rotation as an XO or Tactical Officer before BuPers had a command to assign them.

That was probably more likely before the big fleet buildups, because you wouldn't have enough command positions available for all graduates - and the course is still beneficial for non-commanders. Once you had all those ships looking for officers you probably had to more heavily prioritize immediate command candidate for access to the crusher.
But, still, it doesn't seem wildly implausible for things to line up such that Abigail gets to take the crusher early before slotting back into a non-command position.

What dos Abigail herself have to do that can not be smoothed along by her mentors before she can take the Crusher? What are minimum service requirements you have to complete before you can take the Crusher?

Probably only have sufficient rank to be a potential ship
captain. That would be Commander or Captain JG for the most part, with a leavening of Lt Commanders of exceptional aptitude; Abigail would fit the latter description except she is still one promotion shy of the requisite rank.

agreed.

pre-war you probably would have had to show that they were well a well rounded officer, not just someone who can fight.

but i suspect a lot of the stuff that wasn't critical has long since been scrapped

For a fun line some one begging her not to follow her idols example and to return the ship she is given in a good condition that can be sent out again with out major repairs.
