spin off from the HMS Fearless thread.
now given that Abigail is unlikely to get a ship before RFC wraps up the current arc feel free to speculate wildly. also take it as a given that shortly every class (bar LACs) below the wall will be DDM capable. (while not guaranteed yet it strikes me as inevitable that a DDM CL will appear, if only to simplify logistics though it may take a while to replace/mothball all the legacy ships. either that or DDM will be come exclusive to BC/HC and DD will revert to SDM only, so as to be able to carry a goodly number of them as the roland's do suffer from very limited ammo comparably) now that all the caveats are out of the way. assuming her following years are a strong as her early ones i'd like to see her go straight to CL, she clearly has the gift and putting her on a destroyer, even one as tough as a roland seems a waste. that said their is a reason that most Captain's start with a destroyer as the first hyper command, presumably something to do with less people they can get hurt/killed if they screw up by the numbers. Kind of wonder how things were back when the RMN still had frigates and corvettes, were they used the same as destroyers as the first hyper command (assuming those corvettes could hyper). so much as i'd like otherwise unless something major happens i'd say Destroyer for first hyper commnad. thoughts? |

How does she get a ship?
She is sent out as tac officer or whatever on a raiding mission. Her ship takes a hit. She is senior surviving officer. She carries out the book-length mission and returns. |

The odds seem reasonable that Abigail's first shot at command will be due to some sort of combat accident which kills or WIAs everyone senior to her. Her first command will probably be the Roland class HMS Tristram.
Going straight to the Crusher before her first official command is even likelier. Especially if she inherits tactical command and saves the ship. But I wouldn't bother with a light cruiser for her. Why? There isn't a DDM light cruiser in service yet and Miss Owens is the most experienced DDM specialist in RMN or GSN service. That almost certainly means a short stint in R&D to provide a shooter's perspective on the next generation of DDMs. After that, probably a Roland. She'd still be a full Commander or a junior grade Captain, so doesn't warrant a Sag-C. |

Not going to happen, on her current ship she is the juniorest department head and IIRC her ATO is senior to her by time in grade. Abby has several more hoops to jump through to get a command, like a XO's tour. |

Cross posted from HMS Fearless thread:
Interestingly, Abigail should have sufficient seniority and experience to get her first ship at about the same time as Rachel Mayhew and Hipper are ready for a middy cruise. Wouldn't Abigail's first command (a Grayson destroyer or light cruiser) and Rachel's middy cruise being combined cause a few apoplectic fits in the keys? Added: I don't think we've seen what Grayson has come up with for a DDM Destroyer or light cruiser. We have seen them go their own unique way in ship designs before so Abigail just might be ready for a ship when Grayson fields a new design where her experience with DDM combat would give her an edge for command. .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |

"her ATO is senior to her" This works less well if the ATO is also deceased. |

another excellent point harold, though grayson was building roland class before oyster bay with only minor changes, mainly to electronics and berthing, (see house of steel pg 645 mass paperback) .
I would like to see a DDM CL but grayson doesn't seem to be inclined to differ with the RMN over what a CL's job is and therefore what the required tonnage is to do said job. of course that may change once they got some more data back on how the Roland class has been performing. one possible good thing about the loss of blackbird is as they can't build anything they can spend more time kicking ideas around and who knows what they might come up with. so lots of DDM experience might be handy for the skipper of a brand new DDM CL, though with 17+ rolands, not to mention the Sag-C clones they were building (again 17+ according to house of steel) in their possession there will be other officers with some familiarity of the DDM. |

Abigail is actually the head tactical officer on the Tristram. In the RMN tactical officers may be considered command path even if head of another department has seniority by rank or time in service.

Yes and no, who is and where the fall in the chain of command depends on the rank and seniority of the officer. IIRC on the Tristan the chain command was CO XO Cheng Astro ComO ATO then TO. During my navy service I had a division officer who was senior to the XO in both time in service and grade but was junior because of the position the XO held. |

Who is in command could be complicated by what kind of situation they are finding themselves in and the disposition of the officers above her in the command chain. Some of them may yield command due to either not having the skill set or feeling that they would better serve the ship running their division. |
