Given that the largest war in human history is about to start with fall of the SL it is not impossible for Abigail to get her own command far quicker then would be possible at any other time.

most of the time a first command is a destroyer. How about one of the new reliants for Abigail? <><><><><><><><><><><><>

Sometimes it is very difficult for logic to proceed regarding ship retirement. The political process is alive and well and must be tasted by those who make such decisions.
Economics sometimes does not win out. Public perception and pride do enter into it. Hopefully pure logic would determine if and when a ship gets scrapped ... or recycled. But ... not always. Our United States Navy has such a tradition. Right now there is pressure being applied to rename the next Ford class carrier the Enterprise and not the JFK? |

That question has already been settled JFK will be Ford #2 while Enterprise will be #3. Also, The Navy is pushing to name rest of the Ford class after famous WWII carriers like Lexington Yorktown Hornet and not after statesmen. |

I suspect there is a surplus of qualified officers compared to the new production ships. |

But Abigail would be overqualified for some ships. As Honor was. Honor's first ship should've been bigger. She could've had a V8. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

Plus everyone forgets that Lieutenant Hearns is on loan to the RMN. Protector Benjamin and Admiral Yanakov want her to learn from the best of the best, but they want her commanding one of their ships as soon as they can get their grubby hands on her. I'm guessing they'll try to shape her career to get to The Crusher as soon as she can without cheating and then give her first Grayson ship command when she graduates with flying colors as expected. I wouldn't be surprised if Abigail's assignment before heading to The Crusher is as XO in a Grayson ship. Now where that ship gets assigned, in the words of the Celery Runner, DUM DUM DUM! |

i hate to counter my own point but Niamoi Caplin went from tac officer, even if one on a very powerful heavey cruiser that if it was anywhere other then heaven sector would be called a battlecruiser, to command of a destroyer, which again anywhere else would have be called a light cruiser.
now it is possible she spent time as XO elsewhere, but it would be unusual to go from XO on a hyper capable ship to back being tac officer, so for "the Right" officers bupers will skip parts of the normal progression. I can't see grayson doing things much different but Abigail is a special case and jumping her from tac officer even of a saganami or BC to command of a cruiser say would probably have some of the conservities in the Keys having fits |

Reliant's in the RMN are battlecrusiers and are being replaced by nike's as quick as manticore can build them (or were before the loss of the yards), due to the reliant design being pre 1st haven war. it did get modified late on the first war but I believe that the changes were more to compensator and a few tweeks to weapons loadout, none of the new automation or keyhole etc was included. nor can it fire DDMs. now a Roland like what she is Tac officer on is a destroyer and maybe a possibility when she hits LT comm but given that she was grayson's first Midshipwoman and that she is a steadholder daughter grayson Bupers is going to have to be able to show that dotted every I and crossed every T of the nesscary steps or the conservite keys will howl even more then usual. |

I don’t have my list of Honor’s accomplishments on me, but I believe after an XO stint, she did a stint as a tac officer on a larger ship. So it’s not unheard of for an officer to bounce back and forth between specialist and commands positions prior to command. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |
