This is why little pistols firing powerful rounds are not a lot of fun.

Which is one of two reasons why the average Lady Derringer is apt to opt for a .22 derringer.

The average woman doesn't plan to use a derringer to kill the b*astard, she just plans to be able to get away to live another day.

Then have the police follow his bleeding arse and pick him up in the emergency room.

He's the one bleeding and wide-eyed from "shell shock."

Most of the recoil on a rifle or handgun is not due to the bullet's velocity, it is the gas that propelled the bullet escaping the muzzle.

Since the pulser dosen't have this, it can have a heavier projectile (not as thick, but much longer) going much faster, and still have less kick than a chemical powered firearm.

Which is why I said a non-chemically powered weapon upstream, to decrease gas recoil.

Actually, the formula is a bit more involved than that or what kzt has given. It's essentially (with a tad bit of tweaking) one of the same formulas used in my long gone, but much remembered, model rocketry days...

If one knows the average velocity of the escaping propellant, the free recoil velocity (in a vacuum) is simply:
V = ( b*v + c*p ) / W

where b is the bullet's weight, v the muzzle velocity, c the charge weight, p the average velocity of the escaping propellant gases, and W is the rifle's weight.

Edit:
Found the site that uses this same formula which I borrowed some time ago to write an algorithm to calculate kick on a programmable TI calculator.

My niece adapted the algorithm for her smartphone. For when she and my sister goes to the firing range.

High Standard made a 2 shot over/under derringer in .22Magnum. The safety is the really stiff trigger pull. Base model came with a leather case that- if you took the thing plastic grips off and used the screws for them to attach the case- looked like a thin wallet. You are going to want to use the hollow-point rounds. In the wallet case it is just a flat wallet looking thing and you wouldn't want to go waving it around.

If you are going to use that, you are going to be at belly range-as in you pull it out, stick the front in the person's belly, and pull the trigger twice. The trigger pull doesn't allow for a lot of fine aiming. Unless they are wearing body armor, they are going to have something to worry about as you run away. Its not like a .38 or a .45 but it will kill you. Probably not right away, but they dam well are going to need medical attention. Head shot.....22Mag vs .45...doesn't really make much difference other than the probable mess as the .22 is likely going to bounce around inside the skull instead of blowing out the other side.

Weapon of last resort.

Nice design. But will it lead to Blacks being shot for carrying cellphones?

Good thing staples come in various grain sizes as well. When extended, it looks like one powerful frickin' staple gun.

.

Not necessarily Americans of African decent but others have been killed while reaching for a cellphone by police. People have been killed by police carrying a cellphone, foil wrapped food like burritos, burgers, cheese steaks, a short length of pipe, water pistol, staple gun, pellet gun, airsoft gun, suction cup dart guns, aluminum beverage can, nerf guns, etc.

Reaching for anything when cops are pointing guns at you is really, really stupid. Often, Darwin Award stupid.

I don't think African Americans got the memo...

Reaching for the sky to surrender is a reach.

Trying to be Black and not get shot by a White cop is really reaching.

African Americans must be confused as hell and think it's a setup when white cops order them to "STOP! REACH FOR IT!!!"

Yep, numerous mentions in textev. Apparently a very common tech in the Honorverse.
