They were not investigating. This not Ternaithia but a foreign city. Most of the passive layers of protection are not present. The assassination attempt will unleash the investigators. That attempt will also let the protective service completely take over Tajvana and bring in all those passive layers.

Chava had his shot and missed. His life is now in Andrin's hands. What she does with it will be interesting.

Chava or some Uromathian POV laments this once. Text also stipulates that there are near unique Talents associated with the Imperial protective service. They are especially good at sniffing out spies, assassins and conspiracies or the Caliraith dynasty would not have survived for nearly 5 millennia.

All of this suggests that Chava has as much chance at hiding his activities as a snowflake trying to survive in a blast furnace. He'll try to kill the investigators but won't surprise them. Any such attack will expedite the unraveling his well designed plans.

So where were they when they were needed?

I pretty much agree with this, but let's not do victory laps too soon. Chava will probably turn out dangerous when cornered.

I wouldn't insult RFC nor Joelle by assuming Andrin will have it easy. My point was that the variety of difficulties Andrin will face will be interesting. Chava will try to weasel out of his just deserts and Andrin will try to visit justice upon his sorry tuchas.

I am still thinking of all of those army units being sent by
all of those countries to the Larakesh Portal, intended for
the Front. Which countries will divert units to Tajvena,
to make sure that these International Politics come out right?

I agree Howard. How that plays out will be very interesting. I suspect Chava might have a bit of a jump and will make things dicey for the Caliraiths in Tajvana.

Equally interesting, all the army units that were _supposed_ to be sent to the portal that didn't turn up - to the surprise and concern of their own colleagues.

Every such unit should have Voices with it,
allowing it to be tracked in real time.

Sorry Peter, but I would have thought that with the entire family in Tajvana, with 2 of the Calirath's biggest enemies literally in arms reach, staying in the Palace that one of them bitterly resents the Calirath's continued ownership of, that they would have their ears to the ground, spies in every apartment, monitoring every meeting that everyone goes to, day or night, especially with all those special talents that had been developed in the service of the Hawkwing crown.
This was a terrible screw-up on the part of the protection service.

I would agree. They should have brought the kitchen sink as well as the backup plumber to service it.

I think that Talents, especially Voices with serious ranges, are still thin enough on the ground in the Uromathian Empire that nobody is surprised that they don't.

Presumably that will change, but it hasn't yet.
