That would be the obvious thing to do, provided your weapons have the range to do it. Currently the EoC's artillery outranges that of the CoGA, and with smokeless powder in the works, that margin is about to increase... It's not within the tech they currently have. They don't have impact fuses for shells because they can't build one that won't go off upon firing and will reliably function upon impact. A mine needs a fuse. |

Something that works brilliantly in the Safehold tactical, political and social environment. None of which that TF tactical unit is programmed for.
Not to mention that flashes of genius is what his human masters were hired for

Hey Loren: Maybe I'm misreading your reply, but I think they DO have impact fuses and fuses for mines. There was language in at least one of the books with a conversation between Sharleyan and one of the officers about impact fuse experimentation and development, and IIRC the Charisians have used buried mines before. The technology is rudimentary, but I get the impression that it is maturing rapidly. |

i'm in the middle of reread and I say they definitely have impact fuses.
during one of the first actions in sidmark by ICM a man portable mortar is setup on a goat trail over looking the enemy. the officer in charge musses about how the impact fuses have a 12% failure rate, which is another way of saying they work 88% of the time. book 5 i think it is. |

They have impact fuses but not for shells. An impact fuse that will work reliably on impact but won't go off when the shell is launched is more than they can do at present. |

The do have impact fuses. They are a metal ball suspended by wires in a casing that is lined with whatever it is in a percussion cap. When the shell is fired, the metal ball breaks the wires and moves to the back of the casing. When the shell slows down, ie, impacts something, the ball moves forward striking the primer which explodes (or whatever it does) thus igniting the gunpowder. --

Remember that I was a geography major but what about sound-powered phones.My peek at the Wiki article said they can be made to work up to 30 km which would be more than adequate for observer to battery comms. The hard part would be figuring out how to get the thing "invented" without going too far into the electricity swamp.
and of course they would be helpful aboard naval vessels. |
