I recently read a fanfic titled 'Honor Amongst Thieves' and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, only at the end did the author thereof have the indecency to declare his/her fic a response to the 'fact' that the Honorverse is 'dead', seeing as how the series is just going on and on. Apparently the author wished to show how the series could have been wrapped up in 380 or so pages.
Well, Mr or Ms fanfic author, I for one am damn glad that you ain't Mr Weber, otherwise I would have been deprived of many, many hours of utterly mesmerizing reading enjoyment. I LIKE the fact that the series just goes on and on and on. In fact, I love it. It makes it possible for Mr Weber to really get into the details of every aspect of the universe he created when he first wrote 'Basilisk', from the wide range of societies, cultures, political dynamics & ideologies to the interpersonal interactions & relationships to the characterizations to the military hardware & tactics. As a result, the Honorverse has become just about the most vivid and vibrant alternate universe any sci-fi author has ever created. It is one of the sad facts about most sci-fi media, that while the authors focus on the action they seriously neglect the context within which the action takes place and the rationale that motivates the action. Equally disappointing is the sloppy characterization that, well, characterizes so much of popular sci-fi. So, Mr Weber, I wish to conclude my rant with sincere thanks for your hard work. |

now that is low. making money by talking about what they think is wrong with the honorverse.
they don't like it? fine they are entitled their opinion. I will admit that there are times i find later books a little long winded compared to the early days, they they are still excellent books. But to actually go as far as to CHARGE people to read his opinion strikes me as VERY not cool. |

It is no different than a go-fund-me site for 'y' persons stupidity and irresponsibility. At least this guy did something... No, I have not bought or read it. I have no need to, nor does anyone else who has actually read DW's works over the years, started poor, got better, got excellent, became superb and had declined to writes excellent opening 3 chapters and then descends into poor territory. I read his critique synopsis long time ago. I need not read further. And no, he doesn't say anything we/I have not said about David Webers books after AAC. Same reason I cannot stand his Safehold books. Very poor writing IMO. Big on blather from 6 million different characters no one gives a tinkers damn about unless it was in a short story, low on substance or logical thought. _________

I am utterly baffled by this. The book, according to the review on the amazon page, is nothing more than a bunch of distilled criticisms the patrons of this forum (and, I would imagine, Baen's Bar or other SF/F-communities) are completely familiar with. Who's the audience for this? I mean, I agree with at least some of the criticisms levied there, but I don't feel any particular need to pay money to read it, given that I can get that sort of criticism for free in a multitude of places. |

Hats off to anyone who manages make people pay to read a critique. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

When I saw the title of this thread, I was half-expecting someone complaining about no new chapters of my stuff in over nine months ...
Though the next chapter of "An Offer She Can't Refuse" is about 2/3 done. Sadly, it's been that way for a while. |

Ah, this is the John Lennart book which has been much
discussed in HONORVERSE FORUM of BAEN'S BAR. Lennart has posted there, defending his work. Regarding his charging money to read it, he identifies himself as a professional critic, as well as an author. He shows that he is just doing his job. Of course, other posters on Honorverse had other opinions! HTM

Oh, a "Professional" Critic.
That is somewhere close to a professional politician except if they actualy called themselves that, some people would start returning "politician" to its original slot as the oldest profession. Big Smile |
