The naming of United States Navy vessels for living people was common in early decades of American history, but by World War II, the Navy had firmly established a practice of naming ships for people only after they had died. In 1969, a Navy panel decreed that warships would no longer be named after living persons. That lasted until 1974, when President Richard Nixon announced the naming of an aircraft carrier after United States Representative Carl Vinson. Since then, ships such as the Arleigh Burke, Henry M. Jackson, Bob Hope, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Gabrielle Giffords have been named for people still alive at the time.

And a precedent has already been set with the GSN Honor Harrington. The cat and her person's out of the bag now. May as well roll-ship with it.

Yeah, but they thought they were naming the GSN Honor Harrington after a dead person. Honor was just impolite enough to come back and prove they were in error on that point. :D

So I'm not sure that actually counts as a proper precedent - or at least that's what the ship naming purist within the Admiralties will argue.

Care to tell me where either Haven or Manticore got a working Streak Drive and had the time to reverse-engineer it to then make their own working copies and the design changes to fit ANY of the existing or new Haven or Manticore warship designs?

I predict that the new class of SD(P) will be the Alliance class.

The "bolthole specials" described in textev aren't anything like what you project. Those will be the "first thing to come out of bolthole." A basic Havenite podlayer with Havenite "running gear" (drives, compensator, lifesupport, etc) ferried to Beowulf for installation of Manticoran electronics and Keyhole II.

Those might well be the Alliance Class of SD(p)s but they're not going to be up to the standards of the Medusa's or Invicti. There may be something that meets or exceeds Invictus standards in the future, but it is NOT going to be the near future or "the first thing out of Bolthole."

Heh, yeah didn't happen. They've got theoretical details from what's his name, Mesa guy who worked on improvements to the Streak drives. But I figure it'll take longer to redo the theoretical work based on that to build prototypes than the alliance wants to wait to start rolling out the combined technology SD(P)s described in the books.

Though I suspect they have enough info to know that the Streak drives are larger; so I wouldn't be surprised if even those original rushed chimaeral designs left extra room around the hyper generator to facilitate a future refit of a streak drive generator.

I'm not so sure they'd leave extra room. Warships are already running the ragged edge of maximizing what they stuff into their hulls as it is. Leaving extra room on the off-chance you reverse-engineer something to use is risky.

The Mars-class heavy cruisers sort of did that, but what they did was build in heavier nodes than they could actually compensate for. Which seems to give the impression all compensators are loosely exactly the same size, that the People's Navy could steal and reverse-engineer Manticoran compensators and relatively easily pull theirs out, plug in upgrade, and rock and roll.

They may - but then again, without having a very good idea what dimensions the streak drive (hypergenerator) will take, it'd leave you needing a whole lot of stuff you're prepared to lose in that refit. And they won't know too soon just what that refit will entail in terms of fiddling with the rest of the systems. Simoes may be able to provide a little knowledge that way, but that's solidly into engineering details that were not his end of the work. On top of that, there's what a streak drive generator will look like with near-future RHN technology (with due allowance for their general tech and skill base) or with Manticoran tech, neither of which will be a very close match for Mesan Alignment Navy specs.

Once they do have a good grasp of what a near-future streak drive generator they'd build and use would look like, I can see them start to build units with an eye toward such a near-future refit (or altered completion on the slips). They just don't have that grasp yet.

Related to this is a significant monkey-wrench in the Bolthole builds for Manticore and Beowulf plan: Manticore is and Beowulf likely will be relying on manpower-conservation automation-heavy designs that demand engineering skill that Bolthole simply does not have. The plan has some electronics at least being slapped in in Manticore, but it still leaves the impellers, most sensors, life support, sidewall generators, fusion reactors, and hypergenerators all built by people who have been building ships for operation and maintenance by far larger crews with a far weaker average skill level. Mind you, the results are likely to suit crews coming out of Silesia or Talbott much better, but they'll suck up Old Star Kingdom personnel like sponges.

Wiki - The GSN has a regulation forbidding the naming of ships for living people. There was a line about that when Honor was talking to Mike Henke about how they had to get permission to keep the name when Honor came back from Hades.

I remember the Thing about the Graysons named their ships Harrigton class and don´t changed it back after Honor´s return from Cererus! The said, that it would be to complicated to rename everything in all documents, so they keep the name! Maybe that is an lame excuse.....

Perhaps it is time to honor a dead treecat with a ship named after him, or her.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

interesting idea but i don't think it is practical.

most humans settle for fairly normal names, the few who go with something more exotic i.e. Banshee tend to use names that would likely be used on a ship anyway.

using the cats true name is even worse.

take treecat 1 who started this partnership. HMS Climbs quickly. hmm don't work. HMS Lionheart is good but could easily have be used prior.

let's try a couple of more modern cats.

HMS Laughs Brightly. nope that don't work. HMS Nitmitz hmm doesn't really work for anyone who doesn't have a good knowledge of old earth war history.

HMS Golden Voice. again doesn't quite work HMS Samantha. too easy to get mixed up with Samantha Winton which defeats the purpose of naming it for the cat.
