outside the Harrington family and the cat's memory singers and the Sphinx Forresrty Service the answer is not very.

even to Honour who probably has access to the family diaries (as referenced in What Price Dreams) it is a dusty legend almost on a par with the other legends like marie celeste or king arthur.

so not very well know outside a very small slice of the SKM population. even smaller now that so many relatives on her dad's side were killed via Oyster Bay

Surely she's shared it with Michelle, wouldn't you think?

I wonder how much the treecats gossip? Now that they can communicate, Ariel could very well have shared it with Elizabeth. Or any of the younger cats on Grayson could be singing like a felon.

'Cause the memory singers have put it all out there...

as i said there is no mention of the adventure outside the actual story of the incident (a beautiful friendship) and a small mention in "what price dreams" which was something along the lines off.

Princess "so the story about the hexapuma is true?"
SFS general "oh yes but the story is not widely told. Stephanie was a very private person who did not want limelight/noteriaty/attention."

Adrieene only knew as she was mad about 'cats, was a princess so had access to more info then most and the incident was much more recent a century or so compared to the 3 centuries + that it is for honor

the only time it gets close is in book 4 i think. Dinner at comso's with several old crew McKeon, Venzisales, scotty, and she says something about how the first treecat adoptee was a 10 year old girl whose last name was Harrington.

So has she told Mike or any of the others from Fearless/Nike? very possibly but no text to confirm.

RFC has always very much tried to insulate the main series from the short stories, relying upon small mentions. see bachfish in war of honor. There is about 2 lines devoted to the fact that he was her first captain and that she did a middy cruise to silesa with him. no mention at all of all the other things that happend on that very memorable snotty cruise.

shadow singer mentions singing the song of Stephanie and Climbs quickly especially, and that she KNEW all of Death Fang's Bane clan who have been adopted from Death Fang's Bane herself to Dances on Clouds and her meeting with Laughts Brightly (nimitiz).

I can easily see the story being passed at dinner party on grayson. are if any heavenite/solly gets uppity at a banquet about honor, a cat says "DoC when 12 alone in sphinx forest shot 2 peak bears with rifle from close range. Her ancestress when 10 stood alone against a charging hexapuma armed only with a knife. insult her again and i'll demonstrate laughs brightly moves from the grayson coup attempt"

but in a more "ingio montoya vibe", "you insulted dances on clounds, apologise or prepare to die"

ummm....

Shouldn't that be "she kilt her a 'puma when she were only 10"?

Yes, but to skin it, she'd first have to kill it. *Road kill that size could feed a lot of treecats. I always assumed the 'puma was put to good use. And their little, much more-than-honorary, 10-yr-old 'puma slayer did the... lol... honors.

*Road kill because Honor was Nimitz' road dog. Road dog: slang for best friend.

that would be epic.

Not quite minor nit: I think that a full grown hexapuma is closer to 2 kilotons* (as opposed to 20 kilograms*).

* Metric units: 1 kiloton = 1,000 kilograms**
** 1 kilogram ~= 2.2 pounds

Actually, both of you are off by an order of magnitude.

The 'puma Stephanie met one day was 'six or seven hundred kilos'.

All that need to be said is that a hexapuma carries the mass of a small car. I had a friend in 1995 that drove a 1500 lb car. Imagine a car with teeth and claws, moving with the quickness of a hexapuma and leaping into the air and pouncing on top of you.

More than twice the mass of the biggest lion.

The pounce alone will kill you.

And Hexapumas appear to be about 5 meters long (though I'm sure that includes a fair length of tail; and they're much lankier creatures than something like a bear).

Glad you found the weight reference. I'd missed it when I did a quick search, but did find the length description
