“I still love books. Nothing a computer can do can compare to a book. You can't really put a book on the Internet. Three companies have offered to put books by me on the Net, and I said, 'If you can make something that has a nice jacket, nice paper with that nice smell, then we'll talk.' All the computer can give you is a manuscript. People don't want to read manuscripts. They want to read books. Books smell good. They look good. You can press it to your bosom. You can carry it in your pocket.”
― Ray Bradbury

Amen. I love the rustling of pages and the occasional paper cut too. Curling up on a favorite sofa by a cozy fireplace with an ereader douses the fire.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

The problem with internet quotes is that you can never verify them.

And used paperbacks are affordable also. One library near here is trying to clear the shelves of their used book room: U$ 1.00 per grocery bag full. This is much less expensive than hand copied books. ;)

Speaking of which:

When talking with youngsters about the value of reading, my favorite historical library joke is often introduced.

Before the invention of printing, Oxford University bragged about their library. They had over a hundred and fifty books in it ;)

It isn't really crude and impolite to laugh at your own jokes, is it?

Nope. Just human.

Real funny is independent of the genius that delivers it.

Absolute funny will even split the side of its creator.

I have 2 good ones:

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.

Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who believe they're in good company.

Hawking is great at physics, but my version would be:

The greatest enemies of knowledge are theories without a good evidence based test. The ignorance can be assumed - in such cases we don't even know that we don't know.

Just saw something that's true in this day and age:
