IF there's any bonding happening, it's because David is throwing Rose a bone to keep her quiet, and giving Shannon (and possibly a few other Havenites) properly bonded 'cats and not mere bodyguards. Although the odds of Rose keeping quiet if she gets her loves bonded treecats is slim to none, I'm sure he'll try.
Objection, facts not in evidence! Inference maybe but not hard fact, not even the cats are certain. All we know is that the ones who feel that call actively seek it, nothing that says only those cats can be bonded to humans.
Nimitz is a good example. He had no interest in bonding with a two-leg, it just.... happened.
