This thread got me to thinking: Is there anything in the Proscriptions that bars flight?
The thing is it's possible to build a helicopter with no electrical system whatsoever. I can't find any violations of the Proscriptions although I doubt it would actually be possible to manufacture without violating them. (It runs on 70% H2O2 and the purity requirements for that are pretty strict. Don't cut corners with monopropellants if you want to be around tomorrow!) |

I don't remember any textev about flight being in the Proscriptions, but if it is that would explain why nobody's invented the hot air balloon yet.

As far as I know, the only thing we know of that is explicitly prohibited is electricity. We also know that the Writ limits power to "Wind, Water and Muscle" which probably covers your peroxide powered helicopter. .

I believe there was textev somewhere about the air/sky being the realm of the birds and the arch angels and keeping it holy or some such mumbo jumbo, so flight is probably out proscriptions wise. Other than that I think helos would be approved under mechanical created wind and they appear to have opened the door to fuel created water or wind power with forges and steam pressure. It's a short hop to direct fuel expansion mechanical energy systems. I hope they open this door before the conclusion of the current ark. Mechanical gate computing as well, but please oh please skip open/close and go to a more complicated system.

AFAIK, that is Forum speculation rather than textev. .

Still - it brings out the possibility of things not being contrary to the Proscriptions but still being in a kind of specific bad odor, Writ-wise, above and beyond being any innovation at all. Not that that will stop people, of course. A lot of Dr. Lewys' work has been about teasing out useful things from the Archangels' warnings about bad stuff to do with substance X or process Y. I can't imagine that's not specifically kinda shady Writ-wise and yet there they go. |

People aren't outright FORBIDDEN from doing these things like the Proscriptions; they're just being warned that they'll piss off some angel or other and incur some kind of "curse". And an even more biased rules lawyer will speculate that the angels WANTED people to employ these "curses" in a productive manner, otherwise the angels wouldn't have told people about them. It's basically the age old dillemma: is this difficulty a sign of God's disfavor or a challenge mortals are meant to overcome? There's no way for mortals to tell the difference in advance. |

There is textev by Makhlyn that some mathematical operations are proscribed. When he was studying the first Owl batch, he said he was finally able to understand what those proscriptions referred to.

'Oh, oh' he said in English. Evidently, he had completely mastered that language. |

It is perhaps of interest that the first powered airplane to obtain considerable net (of weight) positive lift, though not controlled flight, was Maxim's steam aeroplane.

I went back and read about the test of that, and it was rather humorously noted that as soon as the pilot felt the lift, he (wisely) cut the power... Don - When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.
