Although it is not well explained in the main series books I believe some of the official short stories suggest that gravitic sensors actually work on the hyperspace-real space interface where the spead of light is probably different. I also assume they must use parallalax to determine range by having 2 sensors with a base of known length. AKA they are not direct sensors in real space. This also helps explain why ships with impellors (which cause ripples in the hyperspace-realspace interface) are only visiable while accelerating despite weighing multiple million tons but a 200 ton missile can be seen just fine under drive. Also the constant comments about the "Hash" of conflicting signatures could be considered the overlapping ripples of many point sources in close proximity just like raindrops on a pond. |

And that's why it's been explained (IIRC somewhere around where Apollo was introduced) that FTL comms and sensors work at 62c (the speed of light in the Alpha bands). Though IIRC it's misstated as 64c in at least one spot in the books. It hasn't been spelled out in the books but the logical implication of that, combined with the speed by hyper band table, is that FTL sensors get less FTL the higher you go in hyperspace. That by the time you're in the Theta bands your sensors are working at only 1.2c But as you say this is entirely different that detecting even planetary mass gravity. And since, as far as we know, there's no Honorverse style hyperspace in the real universe their style of "gravity detector" isn't what we're experimenting with. |
