IMHO treecats would be good at spec ops near thier level of comfort, namely woodlands and possibly grasslands were they would more than likely be mistaken for local wildlife. They could also be used in specialized recon units scouting out ahead of any ground force. The can report back by using a substitution reporting method like Pinnace=Death Wing, Assault Shuttle=Death Gleaner, Tank=Whistling Sucker. They can also communicate over long distances in total EMCON. They would be good at conducting SAR aboard ship in the aftermath of battle by assisting in searching for unconscious personnel.

As a part perimeter security they can sense the mind glows of people trying to breach it without using technology.

IMHO Treecats are too important and dangerous to the Enemy to be sending them out in huge numbers to serve as Marines.
The most I would use them for is Personal Security and occasional scouting if I could make a skinsuit with active camo. In that personal security role I would also use them with any criminal investigations teams or intel teams just like Mike has already used them. The idea wouldn't be to have them engaging the enemy, rather finding them and passing on pre-op intel. Of course, they'd probably be better working at places like Bassingford working with people suffering from PTSD and other mind healing tasks. |

Having at least a little idea about how busy RFC must be, I heroically refrain from requesting a short story along these lines.

The idea of giving a treecat a pulse rifle (which isn't to effective against battle armor) and telling him to go charge the enemy is plain silly.
They wouldn't do well in the role and they are far to valuable. Now as a specialist in a black operations situation, they could be quite handy. Although one of the problems there is, its kinda hard to pretend you AREN'T from Manticore with a treecat in toe. |

Maybe use them for psyops missions.
The situation: You are the CO of a secret R&D installation. One morning you wake up to find post-it notes scattered ALL OVER your facility. How safe and secure do you feel now? |

I can see the Queen's Own regiment adding a fifth battalion, Mount Royal Battalion, Copper Walls Battalion, Falcon End Rangers Battalion, Black Rock Battalion and Training and Depot Battalion.

Let's say we have some target, which could either be taken by 1000 Marines in a frontal assault or by 10 treecat infiltrators. Let's say both units would take 10 percent casualties. (I am selecting my numbers to make calculations easier) If you assume 3 Billion Humans and 12 Million treecats in the star kingdom, assume a similar ratio of "military age" treecats and humans in the overall population you got a ratio of available treecats to humans of 1:500. So it would be more prudent to send in the marines.
If you include the available human population of Haven, Grayson and the Star Empire treecats become even more valuable in comparison. (To be fair the fact that there are no civilian treecat industries important for the war effort means that you could in theory draft every treecat not engaged in child rearing and memory singing). Plus if you wanted to do treecat infiltrators you need to start at zero in terms of doctrine and equipment. I would predict some trial and error before treecat team six would be getting good. Also think about how deployment decisions are made. Counter Intelligence will have the first pick, because treecats there are ultimate force multipliers. ("Are you a spy?" "No" <treecat gives the okay sign> "Okay, we are done.") But VIP protection will be a close second. I mean everybody who is anybody will want a treecat, simply because it will be the ultimate status symbol (also most people like to be safe from assassination). If you have a treecat it means you are so important we can't do without you and our enemies have a bullet with your name on it. Of course if the treecats themselves decided they wan't to be on the front line, that is another matter but otherwise I doubt we will see treecat special forces in the near future. |

Well cats tend to look on enemies as either alive or suitably dealt with.
Interesting idea. They would be a valuable specialist unit. But given their numbers, I can't see them being just a standard marine, unless a 'cat wanted to try it out, or was adopted. |

Actually, there are treecats engaged in civilian treecat industries important for the war effort. The industries are hunting and agriculture (by treecats, to supply treecats with food, because without food for treecats, you have no treecats). -------------------------------------------------------------
