At the Sign of Triumph by David Weber (on sale October 4)
"The ninth volume in the New York Times bestselling Safehold series. The Church of God Awaiting's triumph over Charis was inevitable. Despite its prosperity, the Charis was a single, small island realm. It boasted less than two percent of the total population of Safehold. How could it possibly resist total destruction? The Church had every reason to be confident of a swift, crushing victory, an object lesson to other rebels. But Charis had something far more powerful than simple numbers. It had a king, a crown prince, and a navy prepared to die where they stood in its defense. It had the Brethren of Saint Zherneau, who knew the truth about Safehold's founding. Who knew that the Church of God Awaiting was a monstrous lie. And it had Merlin Athrawes, last survivor of long-vanished Earth. Merlin, the cybernetic avatar of a woman dead over a thousand years, who was determined to break the Church's grip upon the human mind and soul. So after eight years of war, it is not Charis but the Church that stands upon the brink of defeat. But the Church still commands immense resources, and — faced with the unthinkable — it’s decided that it, too, must embrace the forbidden technology which has carried Charis so far. In the end, it is simple, for only one can survive. The lines are drawn, the navies and armies have been raised, and all of Safehold is poised for the final battle between those who believe in freedom and those who would crush it forever." It's been eight years since the war started? Wow, where'd the time go?

"Final" battle? Safehold should be so lucky.

Hi Evil author,
I expect this book while shorter than HFQ, will traverse the seven year anniversary of Clyntahn's permanent simple solution to the "Charisian problem"; ie the actual beginning of the war, even if no one in Charis, including Merlin, knew it yet. Will anyone in the CoGA have the temerity to ask him would he still do it if he knew was going to lose before he dies? Given the 608 pages with the sizable and increasing character appendix among others, this will be less than a hundred pages shorter in text than HFQ, but still longer than others in the series. Given RFC's penchant for victories that cost more than first thought, I suspect the war isn't quite as triumphant or complete as some might be led to believe by the title. L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

With October 8th publication date and TOR's slow turnaround time, do you think that RFC has already turned the book into TOR?

Famine in Harchong and disease from the great big finger given to Pasquale in the camps could easily kill more people in the next two-three years than the deaths due to intentional personal violence in the last eight. Given the timing, someone is sure to figure that's all God's punishment for heretic Charis' resistance to the sainted, martyred Clyntahn. For anyone thinking straight, of course, that's precisely backwards, but thinking straight is a peculiar, exotic, and probably perverted habit among humans. |

Very good question and one I would be very interested to to see an answer from someone informed; on the other hand as the book appears in the official Tor catalog there must be some assurance it exists so to speak - an Amazon date means absolutely nothing but the Tor official catalog is more authoritative The synopsis clearly indicates this is the last book of the arc as we already suspected based on DW's recent comments |

I'd say that the synopsis suggests that this is the last book of the arc. It's been my impression that RFC will let people run with assumptions and enjoy the surprise when they turn out to be incorrect. It's not like he's setting out to mislead us (heaven forbid!), but he's not going to pass up the opportunity to have some fun. Although I'm excited to see how this all gets wrapped up, HFQ didn't feel like the penultimate book to me. I'm thinking that before we get to that final showdown we'll see our heroes encounter what appears to be an insurmountable obstacle, such as whatever lies beneath the temple going active. Maybe that all happens in a single book, but I wouldn't put it past our favorite author to end a book named "At the Sign of Triumph" with triumph having disappeared from sight. (I'll be quite happy to be proven wrong, which admittedly happens more often than not.) |

I wouldn't base too much on the page count at this stage, 608 seems to be some kind of standard number. Amazon UK still says the hardcover version of HFQ has 608 pages despite my Kindle version saying it has 784. |
