One important difference between "hunt and harvest" economies and "herd/ranch and garden/farm" economies is that in the latter the resource is not consumed by its own use. Provided, of course, that it is handled responsibly. Slash and burn farming or equivalents to the contrary, the latter are at least in theory sustainable.

Even the former will recover given enough time. A quarter I mostly rent out has fifteen acres where blowouts in the 30s were bad enough that no one wanted to bulldoze them into shape for farming. There is now a few inches of topsoil, and we are planting useful trees, which don't care about the lack of flatness.

I think SKM/SEM-registered ships still pay transit fees - they just pay a lower amount than a differently flagged vessel. Ships flagged to star nations which have favourable relationships with Manticore also pay reduced transit fees.

Considering that 40% of the League's interstellar trade travels in Manticoran hulls at some point, even the bottom rate is still skimming a vast amount. And these shippers are(or were) bringing in money all the time, probably taxable as corporate income.

IIRC SEM registered merchant ships receive a 60% discount on transit fees. I don't know if MFN (Most Favored Nation) like Grayson and Beowulf receive as steep a discount but I wouldn't bet against it
