While listening to HFQ I noticed that the ships name that was to get thirsks family out was named "Mary Jane". Was this a joke about drug smuggling as the capitan was a known smuggler?

IIRC the ship was smuggling a large quantity of whiskey. |

That wouldn't make much sense. It's either legal or nonexistent. They had plenty of control, they could have kept anyone from bringing seeds if they wanted to. |

It's a joke, but it's a joke in the same vein as people being named "Kent Clark" and "Norman Bates". They're in-jokes meant to appeal to the reader but has absolutely zero meaning to the people of Safehold. Also, I wouldn't put it past the terraforming crew to include genetically engineered marijuana that ups the medicinal value while reducing the addictiveness. It's become part of the standard Safeholdian healer's kit. I believe anesthetics have been mentioned in the text... mostly when groups run out of them. |

Still, nothing beats the Rennaisance Factor "Board of Directors" meeting: the reader groans, and keeps groaning for the whole page. Perpetrated by the same miscreant, figures |

"What if the Mary Jane was captained by Pytahr Pahrkyr as a in joke." There are certain crimes against humanity and common decency that require the full application of the punishments found in the Book of Schuler. This is one of those. |

RFC is always slipping in in-jokes, like in EOH the planet Lois in the Clark system and StateSec commander White and PN commander James Olsen. Or the reference to Silence of the Lambs in We Few. |

Wait was the captains name actually Peter parker? I'm going to have to go back and take a look. These little "in-jokes" with the reader are always a lot of fun to find.

I keep waiting for the "Thunder Child" to make her last, gloriously suicidal stand against an overpowering foe.
