Sidewall burners were not contact nukes. They had fairly short standoff ranges, on the order of a few hundred to single digit thousands of Km, but they were standoff weapons using shaped high yield fusion bombs.

Yes, but they are the same weapon (Contact nuke warheads) used in different modes - but as you point out, they do not actually come in contact with the ship or sidewall in the "burn" setting.

It should be noted that most laserheads have all 3 settings in the same warhead (but not all - some of the original ones like the Mk 50 DD/CL missile were too small), which must be selected prior to launch.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

Let's see ... I know, combine TWTSNBM with a Crippler!

Now, where's Charles' contact info? I know I have it around here someplace....

You know an awful lot of spin off technology has civilian applications. The TWTSNBN in and of itself wouldn't have any civilian applications but is there anything in the underlying technology behind it that could be repurposed?

You mean like building multi-drive missiles? Yeah, you can do that.

I believe Energy Torps are several centuries old by the main series era. If memory serves they are used in the Manticore Ascendant books.

I remember lasers, and primitive missiles, but not e-torps. But it's possible I'm just forgetting them, especially if they were mentioned in passing in the first novel...

I don't actually own either novel yet I just checked them out from the library but I just checked and e-torps are definitely used in the Manticore Ascendant short story in Beginnings. The specs for the Casey class list four e-torp launchers and their namesake ship uses them in the story.

After the Casey used a missile as a make-shift sidewall to keep from being blown up, is when they used the e-torps I believe.

Then the other ships that had been closing to assist turned tail and ran from the 'unkillable' Manty cruiser.

If memory serves anyways, I only read it once and I'm getting old so some of the details wrong

The HMS Casey used them to blast one of the Volsung Mercenary BC's (Thor?) into dust bunnies.
