I wonder what sort of career opportunities someone who retires from a century of service in the navy has to look forward to in the private sector -- someone without highly employable skill sets as an engineer.
Especially someone like Harkness who remains a CPO forever -- of course, Harkness himself has so many other skill sets to draw from. It wouldn't be a problem for Honor because she's rich -- and civil service duty or a teaching post would be open to Honor anyways - if she were to aspire. After a century without you, the private sector can pretty much pass your extended absence and overly specialized skill sets by. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

I don't have access to my books right now, so I'm trying to do it the hard way -- internet searches...
In Echoes of Honor, before she was captured, Honor was en route to assume a certain command. Can anyone remember what command that was? Son, your mother says I have to hang you. IIRC, No, she was getting away from White Haven, accompanying a few ships of her squadron.

Really depends on what you did while in navy service. I would imagine that the merchant marine or working in shipyards would always be available. |

Darn wikipedia again...
http://www.thefullwiki.org/Honor_Harrington Then elsewhere...
Thanks, kzt. Wikipedia had me thinking I'd missed something. It reads as if Honor was headed to assume a command. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. No prob. That is why White Haven is feeling so guilty about Honor getting captured and executed later, because he knows why she was on that ship. |

I think one of those sections you quoted originally came off the back blurb of EoH. It's technically correct in that Honor wouldn't have her full command assembled until she'd returned to Eighth Fleet's base, but doesn't mention she went out early, as described by kzt. Blurbs usually aren't written by the author. And given that the events took place in another book entirely... |

Well her squadron was about to be assigned to join White Haven's 8th fleet; but because Honor informally asked the Graysons for a quick off-planet mission to get her away from White Haven the squadron was assigned the fast logistics convoy. Then upon their return they'd have formally been assigned to 8th fleet. But Honor was already in command of that squadron and would have remanded so while it was part of the allied fleet. |

Other than confuse me, the wikipedia offering did remind me of a curiosity I'd long forgotten.
Ransom is mentioned as being a member of the ruling triumvirate. I could never find any info expounding on that ruling "class." I assume that its an actual conglomerate political structure of three separate ruling "groups" or "families" rather than the implied number of three "people." But that's an unsubstantiated assumption. Can anyone elaborate with textev? Real executive power in Erewhon lies in the hands of a triumvirate or quadrumvirate of family heads as well. It leaves my total image of Haven's political structure wanting. Perhaps its an, as of yet, unconquered read? Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

That particular triumvirate was Rob Pierre, Oscar Saint-Just and Cordelia Ransom. When Ransom died, it was down to the partnership between Rob and Oscar, although Esther McQueen came close to assuming Ransom's place. |
