I wonder if the SLN prizes were thrown in just to give us something to chew on other than the grav lance.

Ya know - as capital ships of their era, the SLN prizes probably have grav lances and energy torpedoes themselves.... Surely something can be done with them using the grav lances.... *hides*

The only problem with fitting a grav lance, that might be insurmountable, was I think I saw "something something grav lance needs a minimum length between the impeller rings" and a CL was the shortest ship that could mount it.

The issue is not precisely separation of the rings, it's the power of the wedge (which is related to the ring size, which in turn requires a certain separation between the rings). It is actually addressed in the pearl I referenced above - the wedge on a LAC just doesn't have the power to drop an SD's sidewall. A Grav Lance on a LAC could drop a DD's sidewall or maybe a CL's, but not an SD.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

No grav lances or energy torpedoes mentioned on any of the SLN BCs or SDs.

According to House of Steel, the Gladiator-class SD incorporated "the newly-developed grav lance" into its broadside. It was launched in 1868, with the Homer-class coming out in 1863 also equipped with a grav lance.

So grav lance technology was developed in the 1860s or maybe 50s. Energy torpedo launchers are older, but possibly only by a few decades - they're on the Ad Astra dreadnought as of the 1878 refit, but may have been present all the way back to 1632.

From a scan of the HoS stats, only two Manticoran wallers mount grav lances. The aforementioned Gladiator and the Anduril SD. But most of the other pre-pod wallers have at least some energy torpedos.

The Crippler isn't remotely useful as an anti-missile defense. It's too short ranged and can't target something as fast as a missile.

Yeah ! The Grav-lance is back ! And here I was thinking that the forum was being really dull these days, what's with the flood of serious threads.

Run, my hamsters, run ! Let's power up that weapon !

This was already shot down the last time you suggested it, a year and a half ago.

And then the power requirement that an LAC doesn´t have.

I really don´t get why people keep saying how the GL can "actually/obviously" be mounted on LACs or whatever when it´s been repeatedly and completely without optionality stated that even for an oldstyle CL, size and power was a problem.

Or should we assume that threadstarter was expecting ~100kt graser torpedoes? ;)
