*However, we would be remiss if we failed to cast some of that shame on Masadan 'women'. I distinctly recall a passage or two depicting some Masadan women's acceptance of the sexes/status quo -- that they even believe it is their destiny to be put in their place. I remember it because I recall wondering if it had some sort of psychological cause -- something akin to the Stockholm syndrome. The same mechanism is in effect when abused women of today begin to feel as if the abuse is normal, as if their actions brought it on themselves - their fault, as if they deserve it. RFC writes accurately to life -- which is why some of his characters totally hiss me off!

*Or at least mention it, considering that because there may be a psychological component, they're worthy of our empathy.

While facing Elizabeth after the Battle of Manticore (I think that's an accurate time frame of this incident in question), Eloise admitted to Giancola's forging of the correspondence. She was ashamed. She was more ashamed when she found out that Elizabeth's father had indeed been assassinated by her beloved Republic. She had inherited the fumes of that excrement. I think she cried a moment of tears in her hands.

I thought Elizabeth would split her wig at the revelation. And for a fleeting moment I think it was touch and go. But Elizabeth looked into those topaz eyes and saw sincerity, strength of character and resolve. In that moment were two titans finally in acknowledgment, trust and understanding. They both had played too much political poker to not see the truth in the windows of the soul - which Eloise counted on in planning the trip in the first place.

The shame she carried for her entire Republic must have been very real for Eloise. As Elizabeth, I knew that was very difficult to admit. Ashamedly difficult.

Elizabeth was ashamed for not being able to help Honor with the only thing Honor ever asked for -- support in her fight against Pavel. Elizabeth wouldn't, couldn't prevent her government from ostracizing Honor, even though she wanted to. She owed Honor and she knew it. But her duty to her Kingdom had to take precedent -- yet, as a friend -- and in considering everything Honor had given for her Kingdom -- she was ashamed.

I also nominate certain members of the government for the way they treated their golden goose of an officer. What a crying shame.

Let's not leave our little Honor feeling left out.

Honor was ashamed for getting hide ripped from her arse in the Solon system during her Cutworm III raids when she walked into a trap. Of course, it could be argued that Honor was ashamed of every single spacer she lost in each confrontation, but she was really ashamed for that one operation because her task force was formed to do the ripping, not the other way around. She felt she had let the Admiralty down, her best friend because Michelle was captured -- and her crew. The Admiralty had to console her.

Of course, a worm will lose every time against a tarantula.

The shame is highly acerbated IMO, by what was specifically left out of textev by RFC (rightly so) but which spoke volumes between the lines -- which was Honor's sexual abuse. It hung in the air like the London fog.

Did anyone else feel that, or was it just my intense bond with Honor?

It is a despicable thing to call oneself superior to other people and claim the right to rule them simply because of one's birth. I guess I'll give Honor an exemption, since she earned her titles through merit, rather than inheriting them. Also, Berry's exempt because she got confirmed by a plebiscite, a democratic process, but any children she ends up having are not exempt.

In that case, you need to include anyone that inherits wealth, as they didn't earn it; also any form of patronage, be it meritted or not.

Thanks for the confirmation. I was beginning to shockingly think it was just me. It still brings tears to my eyes. Just your confirmation of it choked me up. On top of it, Honor was starved. An average person being starved is bad enough, but for someone with such a high octane metabolism like Honor's, it must have been pure torture.

Poor Mac probably had to cook up everything in the cupboards upon her return.
