Isn't the church already taking loans ?
Paper money could be seen as a small loan that is transferable between people. Letting the church print its way to hyperinflation. |

This was mostly in response to Duchairn and Magwair where they said that they would no longer be able to pay for the Jihad in a year and a half. So I would assume that would mean that they would no longer be able to pay for it without the inquisition enforcing exchange rates so I sort of am wondering what happens then.

Nothing, immediately. But it depends on regulating the supply of critical commodities so that neither abundance nor scarcity upset the system. Gradually the attempt to regulate such a system goes out of balance to the point of either revision or collapse. But the critical thing to making the system work is the availability of resourses. Don - When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Other common responses are rationing and resource allocation boards that mandate that resources go to war approved ends.

A good example of a war without Money is world war one. Before world war one there was the Gold Standard. Every Nation had enough Gold in their hands to Exchange it for their paper Money.
In the case of safehold: The church is currupt! The Inquisition can surpress the most Opposition, but the most higher ranks in the church love their Money and would be upset if they have to give it to their army. With bad circumstances there could be a revolution in the temple lands, and not only by the normal workers. |

I'm sure the muggers for God can stick people up for wine and women for the vicarate still too. Mind you, that's going to make revolution by the normal workers all the more likely. |

Who knows, maybe Duchairn can actually invent proper reserve banking a-la the Bank of England as this is a pre-requisite for modern economies. This is a major reason britain could out-spend a much larger France and force the ancien reigeme into revolution.

That plus being a nation of manufactories and shopkeepers who were generationg wealth rather than merely hoarding or dividing it. Don - When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

I feel I should step in here as I do know some history on this. The first example is the English Civil War, where one minister ruminated "There is a lot of ruination in a nation. We may go for some time like this -- only grow poorer and poorer."
The second example is the American Civil War, where the South did indeed run out of money/resources. By the end, their currency was essentially worthless, the existing food supply could barely feed Lee's starving (and steadily smaller) army, resulting in mass desertions, and railways were crumbling and almost beyond repair -- even at Chickamauga, I believe, it took 3 months to move Longstreet from Virginia to Tennessee. Cf. Bruce Catton's 3-volume history, especially "Never Call Retreat." This is what "running out of money" means. |

"Money" is merely a set of tokens with which goods and services can be exchanged by a system other than barter. Troops must be fed, pay means nothing if there is nothing to spend it on, or any place to go to spend it. The same applies to the civilian workers who make guns and ammunition. Therefore, the church will eventually have to concentrate on production of food and weapons, instead of exacting tithes and contributions. Interfering with production of food and weaponry should be made a priority of Charis and allies. Interfering with delivery of both to the church armies is an additional priority of great importance. It will be very interesting to see how Mr. Weber handles the approach to both these matters. Current events suggest that Charis will be visited by saboteurs again, at some point. |
