Hmm, an Easter egg introduced into the control systems of the temple via ninja nanites, and one winter night all just stops, Vicars are trapped as doors no longer work, hypothermia becomes a problem as the temperature is set to -132 degrees F. The temple is uninhabitable for any surviving Vicars. This would essentially decapitate the COGA.

A crude denial of service attack is relatively easy and would accomplish that. The impact on faith and morale could be deep.

I still like the idea of a more sophisticated attack that reprograms the air purifiers to produce skunk oil.

Unfortunately the only way to accomplish this without enormous risk is to physically deliver your attack. Any attempts at remote access would expose your systems to whatever resides under the temple. It might event trigger that something to use the OBS.

The same could be said for physically delivering your cyber attack. It could (in fact likely would) just plain fail and worse alert/wake up whatever is in the Temple that it's under attack.

Plus all the arguments for "Good guys don't know the Temple's architecture and security codes" still apply. Not to mention that if the Temple has the same kind of self repairing nanites that PICAs do, a nanotech attack could well fail as defending nanites take them out.

Trying to launch a cyber-attack against the Temple could awaken the AI that Merlin fears is laying dormant under it, triggering the "Returning Archangels" scenario before the Inner Circle can prepare for it.

Owl told us in the prologue of LAMA that he can't take on a Military Type One AI("...the probability of my destruction would exceed ninety nine percent."), and the industrial module of Nimue's Cave probably can't produce new full scale AIs, or else Merlin would have made some to help Owl with the data load of all the spying.

Conclusion: Probably a bad idea.

There's another good use for expanded fabrication capability. If there isn't a military Type 1 AI in a halt state under the Temple, it's still prudent to figure there might be.

Yes it seems that Merlin is so busy with the shooting war that he hasn't given enough thought to what will be needed once it's won. Alternatively, perhaps owl is already working its poor little electronic fingers to the bone and just doesn't have the spare capacity to plan, build and direct a covert resources gathering operation followed by major building, without having to cut back unacceptably on its current intelligence operations.
