That Rahnhild Pavletic's demise was gut wrenching was sure.

But it was how she died that struck me even more. She was forced to look the Angel squarely in the eyes and saw what was coming as an unavoidable and cataclysmic certain death.

I can't imagine. Poor girl.

[ think everyone is forgetting Paul Tankersly. I get teary eyed every time I read it.

Alistair McKeon.

Even though At All Costs was the first main series Honorverse novel I read I still liked him enough that I gave a sigh of relief when his flagship survived apparently intact. Then boom.

Same here. That's a huge sad pill to swallow. What makes it even worse is the other attached strings of sorrow. Like Paul being Honor's first real love. And right at a time she so desperately needed it -- only to devastatingly lose it.

PLUS! Not lost on me, Paul was suckered into it trying to protect his true love's (h H)onor -- which, in Honor's book, was another death on her hands.

PLUS! The added sadness that Paul was yet another member of Michelle's family lost. AND the added sadness of the guilt therein that Honor must have felt because, well... didn't Michelle somewhat back that union as Cupid?

Raghnild Pavletic. What makes her death so heart-wrenching was that she was so young and full of potential. She should have gone on to have a long and triumphant career. She should have married that Marine and had children. When she did die, her grave should have read "Admiral" not "Midshipwoman".

For me the two that crushed me most are

Alistair McKeon and Andrew LaFollet. Both of their deaths
impacted me greatly. I'm glad RFC didn't kill off Honor, I'm pretty sure that I would have quit the series if she had been killed.

I'm more like absolutely sure that I would have. It's difficult enough as it is for me to read those rural, back road novels of the Honorverse knowing she won't make an appearance. Especially when I've pretty much read most of the mainline series only once, it's quite difficult to read a fork knowing Honor isn't there when rereading a mainline for the first time does include her.

I've got survivor's guilt over Ronny. I developed a savage crush on her straightaway. We all know what can happen when a woman makes you too happy. That damn jealous demon Murphy.
