Something has been puzzling me recently and it's about the number of days in a safehold month. I expect this has been covered way back, but I couldn't find a relevant thread, so hoped that someone could shed light
I had been assuming that safehold months were earth length months, i.e. about 30days. One of RFC's lines about BGV's average speed only made sense if the month was a lot longer - about 50days. That made a lot more sense - giveing longer growing seasons in the north etc. I scouted round and in the very back of my copy of Armagedon Reef foudn the note of Safehold timekeeping. It says that a month is composed of 10x5day weeks, i.e. 50days/month. Now given 10months in a year that makes a year about 500 days. Fine However in that note it also states that there are 301 days in the year. Not fine. Can anyone resolve me this apparent contradiction - is it a typo? |

The quote containing six five-days also mentions a 795 hours long month, which makes it a lot closer to six five-days. ~Tonto |

Somebody failed elementary arithmetic there:
10 months consisting of ten five-day weeks each do not add up to 300 days in my book. 6 five-day weeks per month, yes.

It is six five-days to the month. But I can't think of textev off hand.

Dang that is HILARIOUS. It is finally right in AMF. (6) five day weeks. At least according to my electronic copies on mobi pocket reader. Verified with my Paper copy of AMF for the print Only one I currently have on hand.
What I get for going with the first place I knew it was. My apologies for not fact checking. Still haven't except for this one. So I guess I really didn't learn much. Good catch, T2M -----------------------

I finally re-found the odd textev that I spotted in HFQ when I first started this thread.
p229 hardback [section 1 of April YOG 897].Go4 conference. Magwair says 'but he's advanced over seven hundred miles in less than a month and a half. That's and average of almost eight miles a day...' Now if a month is 6 x five days, then a month and a half is roughly 50 days. Eight miles per day for 50 days makes 400 miles, I do believe, and not 700 miles! So, is there a typo of some sort here or maybe the safehold month is longer after all? |

Perhaps it's just Magwair being bad at math. He's off by a factor of two, it should be 15.55... mile/day -- which sort of matches BGV's estimates, IIRC. .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |

Hi Weird Harold,
Yup, it's one of the several typo's I suspect people are going to post about, though even listing them will not win any brownie points from RFC. It could be a typo either way, as in ~16 miles per day or MPD, or less than 700 miles, depending on where and when they think BGV began his advance, ie if it was ~600 miles in almost 2 month's, it'd be around 10 MPD. 16 MPD sustained for around 44 days straight is a pretty amazing march performance, even with a day being 10%+ longer, and a slightly lower gravity, with caribou and snow lizards doing most of the hard work, though it might depend on just how many caribou, snow lizards, and winterized dragons we're talking about. Anyone care to guess how many animals were involved, ten thousand, twenty thousand, maybe thirty thousand? How much can a caribou pull on a sled? Is that enough for one man for a month or two? Perhaps our Scandinavian friends can help fill in the blanks. L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

How do you factor in the gravity level of 0.9?
I don't think we have enough real world experience to even guess that. |
