And will the battles be actual challenges for the GA or more of the curbstomps like the majority of the battles in the last couple of main-series books

The battles will be the entire SLN versus Mike Henke with a rusty butterknife. She wins. And I forgot the bit where Honor gets the Galactic Medal of Complete Awesomeness and is named Empress of the Known Universe. She accepts the awards on behalf of the 76,283,567,115,807 who died in her last military action, in which she broke a fingernail.

Shannon Foraker's and Sonja Hemphill's genetic daughter with a rusty butterknife against the RF. After-action analysis will show it to be the single most one-sided battle of history, and the book will end with her being adopted by a treecat.

Actually, it will end with her being adopted by the son of Victor Cachat and the Great Kaja, who is actually a treecat in human form.

I really hope that it is 2018 for the mainline series. I'm 63 now and did a lot of partying in the 60's 70's and 80's, so a lot of damage done :D might not make it much past 2018 ;)

I actually listened to the podcast (it is the very last item on the 2nd part of the podcast, actually after the interviewer - editor T. Daniel - tries to wrap it up for the first time) and DW clearly states that he *wants* the last Honorverse book (of the current arc started in 1993) to appear in April 2018, not to be written by then; though he then adds that as he is late with the current book, that may or may not happen...

Thanks for that tidbit. I must have quit listening just before that - I've got an aversion to listening to stuff - I prefer to read. It's faster and I can assimilate at my own pace as well as go back and check things.

I'm basically the same age but can't claim the same lifestyle (somewhat). But I have sometimes wondered which ending would come first; me, DW this saga or a sound mind. Glad to know I have fighting chance now. Make it count!

On the one hand, battles that are actual challenges do make for a more gripping plot.

On the other hand, I'm not gonna argue with the chance to pop some popcorn and watch Henke, Theisman, Harrington, Tourville, Winton, Pritchart, Matsuko, Khumalo, Higgins, et al grind the SL and/or MAlign into the dust.

First, I think we can assume that by "two mainline books" he means "not counting the accompanying Saganami Island and Wages of Sin books". So really six books left.

Still, I don't see it happening in just two. The side-series mostly show alternate aspects of the same things. I think four or five mainline books is more likely. Here's my rough prediction.

HH14: The SLN attacks Beowulf. The Solarian League begins to break apart. The Grand Alliance launches Sanskrit-style raids against Solarian systems, starting with the annihilation of Yulai. Hemphill and Foraker meet.
SI4: Tenth Fleet occupies Mesa and deal with Mesa's daughter colonies. Anton and Victor are on loan from the Wages of Sin series. Probably features the Renaissance Factor forming openly. Also Helen gets to see her father for the first time in ages.
WS4: Barregos and Roszak take the spotlight as the Sepoy Option is activated. Some shenanigans on Darius.

HH15/SI5/WS5: The Solarian League collapses completely. The first battle in the Sol system in centuries. Maya and the Renaissance Factor become true star nations.

HH16/SI6/WS6: As the League dies, a critical clue emerges pointing to Darius. The RF becomes an enemy... with podnaughts of its own. An abrupt end to the curbstomps as the GA suffers its first major defeat.

SI7/WS7/HH17: Grand finale. Similar to At All Costs, only without any attempts at negotiation. The climactic battle (which ends up being about a third of HH17) features thousands of podnaughts and spider-ships, as Benjamin Detweiler personally commands the Alignment/Renaissance fleet against Honor, Theisman, Tourville, Mike, Oversteegen, Terekhov, Yu, Roszak, Brentworth, and Harkness.
