Considering prolong, how old does anyone believe that Honor can be and still fight the good fight? Is it inconceivable that she could forever be pulled out of retirement if the need arises? Is there currently an age limit for an Admiral here on Earth?
"Sonny boy, just help me into that command chair and we'll show these idiots why attacking the Home system is a no no," says the old Old Lady. The notion conjures up imagery of an aging obese Elvis still trying to gyrate and "win that race." lol An Aside - for us with the natural prolong of youth: Here are the best estimates of what to expect in the age of the Honorverse... I believe prolong extends the human lifespan to roughly 200 years and dementia are much better understood, if not completely conquered.
so in theory if she retires at age 100 (she was about 40 when we first met her OBS) she could i suppose be recalled if the need was dire enough (and mentally competent) until she was i'd guess about 180. possibly later if it was an incredibly bad situation, something along the lines of rebuilding the navy after a repeat of the battle of Manticore has wiped out 50% of its manpower and 80% of its veterans. |

Just seems so abnormal. Honor will be kicking ass for well over a century for her Kingdom. And get this, ahe will probably have earned at least a 50th degree black belt in that time. How would you like being a young miscreant thug on the street in your twenties and getting your ass kicked by a 150-yr-old lady while her cat laughs at you? Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Better than getting your ass (and other body parts) shredded by her 'cat while the old lady laughs at you. .
. . Answers! I got lots of answers! (Now if I could just find the right questions.) |

Thanks for your research effort here on exhibit, Bill. It takes more than my legal abilities to ascertain Michelle's possible legal availability to participate in the Battle of Manticore had she been present. Not sure I see any exploitable loopholes. Can we assume our illustrious author think's not -- since he had her off playing in another system? Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. one of the intresting questions that RFC has yet to get around to addressing is how long people are allowed to serve/work before retiring. we know Honour's parents are prolong recipients and will leave to about 200 min barring no issues like having a piece of space station fall on them etc and they are essentially self employed but at what point do corporations/navy say "sorry you are too old now, so you have retire". prolong is meant to keep the body age frozen (at what exact aprox age varies upon which version) almost all the way to the end. so barring some other complication they should stay physically capable until nearly the end. would you what a first space lord whose last ship duty was a century ago? have they kept up with changes in tactics/hardware etc |

The RMN at least rotates officers among staff and line positions as best they can to avoid that. The long stretch of the First Havenite War followed by the politically motivated BS of the Janacek Admiralty and then the screaming urgency of the Second Havenite War made for a serious disruption in that schedule though. It'd be very good to be able to spare Thomas Caparelli or Lucian Cortez for a space, line command to keep them current, but it's unlikely the RMN can stand to have them out of their places in the Admiralty any time soon. |

My sentiments exactly. I can easily envision a future where Honor could be called back. The good news is that there are a few being officers being groomed to replace her. At least one anyways, in the dress of Miss Hearns. But our Honor just isn't totally replaceable. She's an officer of a lifetime. I suppose that Abby will make marks of her own. Yet what if some disastrous war with some, as of yet unknown, entity were to take Abby's life in a way that demands revenge, for instance. Perhaps the 'not so short victorious war' with the MAlign fires on Abby's ship in orbit. Well, I was previously considering Honor being "called" out of retirement, but situations as the above may have Honor herself demanding to wear her uniform again. Besides, we all know she'll have become a female version of Courvoisier -- teaching and shaping fresh prodigies. And just like Courvoisier she can momentarily come out of retirement. It'd be nice if fifty years after her retirement some overly prideful twit of an officer full of themselves get treated to a surprise visit from an elderly Salamander in the war games and have their clock clearly cleaned! "Damn, she's better than the history books!" There are so many untold stories just lingering in the clouds. See them? Does our current navy have a mandatory retirement age? Pro-long isn't a be all cure all, look at Dimitri Young he died of a stroke in his early 90's. In what could be attributed primarily to lifetime of self abuse and over indulgence. IIRC he was in at least a counter gravity chair if not a life-support chair as far back as 1883 PD.
