Overall, I love this series. I've been re-reading all the books and have just finished BHD the 3rd one. In comparison with HFQ, I've liked these initial books a bit better, I guess because HFQ seems to have gotten a bit bogged down in the war. The 1st ones also had battles; but it also had the innovations and inventions and the wonder of new knowledge etc. I like the battle scenes and all, but at this stage of the story I would rather speed up the story line by re-capping the battles rather than living them, if that makes sense.
Anyway, I can hardly wait for the next one, so please write fast DW! |

My impression is that Robert Jordan was revived.
This book reads like the middle-of-WoT books. A lot of descriptions, a whole bunch of things happen but not a single one of them holds the readers interest, and 5 minutes after I put the book aside I was already asking myself what it was about and could hardly remember a single scene. Everything truly interesting seems to happen offscreen or is mentioned in passing. Lots of telling, not much showing. Meh. |

I also prefer the innovations, etc. part of the story. Douglas Hvistendahl

It's been a month already? Wow, how time flies.
Yeah, half the book isn't really all that interesting. I still stand by my initial appreciation though that the most interesting parts in he post-Snippet sections are the ones that have to do with Dohlar. Charisian Armies taking out Church Armies that are already on their last legs? Yawn. Dohlar throwing half its Navy at a single Charisian Ironclad as said Ironclad covers the retreat of fleeing Charisian ships in a heroic last stand? Okay, THAT'S interesting. That action, and the followup actions that result, all lead up to Merlin walking in on Thirsk. |

I found that several chapters were too wordy. I could have done with out all the detail on the 80 mile long fight!!!

I kind of liked the first 90% or so of Out of the Dark. The human characters were believable and the resistance against the invaders was a well-told story. But yeah, the sudden, abrupt ending kind of spoiled the book. |

I really must find time to read this book. I bought the Kindle version as soon as it was available, but my wife died from a hospital infection after major surgery so I've been busy sorting out things, and occupying myself in spare moments by reading some of the books I'd bought her over the years. Now about 3/4 of the way through a 26-book series.

HFQ and all the commenting on it we'll be relentlessly doing can and will wait. It's one of the happy things about the printed word on the one hand and compulsively talkative fans on the other. You do everything you have to in the meantime to manage your loss. Be well. |
