Only one device of a given type per year, certainly, which is all that's needed for clarity.

It's unlikely that they'd have two new (e.g.) general-purpose, new-build infantry rifles in the same year, yes. There is a possibility of confusion if someone can refer to "M95" in a context that doesn't disambiguate between a rifle and a hand-grenade introduced in 895 but where the difference does matter. I suspect those circumstances don't crop up so much, and when they do, appending the actual noun isn't likely to kill anyone.

Its like the old method of designating U.S. military equipment, mostly weapons e.g.

M1895 Krag-Jorgansen standard rifle Spanish-American War
M1903 Springfield standard rifle WWI
M1911 Colt standard issue pistol most of 20th century
M1918 Browning BAR
M1919 Browning standard GPMG until replaced by M60
M1924 Thompson Tommy Gun Chicago Piano

OK guys - thanks, that's a lot clearer. I had been assuming that the pure number totally differentiated between products in ALL ranges, and so was getting confused!

I have to look up but I thought M actually was a reference to the last name of the man who came up with the concept. The genus assistant of Baron Seamount who got blown up in the powder mill sabotage.

I have been wrong before so don't bet the mortgage or next weeks beer money

Pretty sure you're right JeffEngel. I recall textev to this effect in several places but can't remember exactly where.

Only one new device/year of a given class of weapon...
Thus I guess you could have the M98 rifle, the M98 mortar, and the M98 hand grenade I guess. If that makes sense?

The AofG also has rockets, and a balloon or "Blimp" would be most vulnerable.
