What's the difference between a fairy tale and a sea story?

One starts with the phrase "Once Upon A Time" and the other starts with "No $hit, this actually happened".

No 9. My favorite that I remember since the ship I was on was caught in the middle of a typhon and the Captain announced over the ships 1Mc "All hands are reminded to sleep with their life jackets on."

Why? The forward gunmount had sprung a leak at the base of the mount and the forward part of the ships was slowly filling with water.

A seventh could be the President/Head of State: "I need a short, victorous war..."

...but, this is the way we've always done it.

~Seaman Sailor.

Cthia's father ~ "Son, do not cater to the common belief that a person has to earn respect. That is not true. You should give every person respect right from the start. What a person has to earn is your continued respect!"

That's not really a sailor's quote. It's more of a business quote. I've heard it in any number of places I've worked. It's common, especially in a place that's trying to change processes for different or (especially) better ones.

I know what you learned in training, but we do things a bit differently on this ship.

We had similar phrase, training is all well and good, but this is the fleet.

And the sad thing is, it's very true. Reality versus the arm chair theory.
