A little belated, but there you have it!
Any thoughts on what will be forthcoming in the series, or, as another poster put it, "gloriously foolish predictions?" .

You might want to look at this topic: http://forums.davidweber.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3370&hilit=Polish It's maybe a little dated (about 3.5 years old at this post,) and David may have changed his plans due to life circumstances. David gives a broad overview of his plans. Charis wins the war, the next book, later truth is reviled causing a civil war two books planed, then the final showdown with the Gababa the series final book. Transcription and videos of interviews are linked in the posts. Enjoy, Poker CPO Poker Mind and, Mangy Fur the Smart Alick Spacecat.

Not sure I can see a wrap in one more book. Unless the KH's do go steaming into Temple Bay rather than Gorath.

I had the estimate of the first snippet request at 9-14 days - you beat it at 8 days!
I can hear the muttering arise from the Webber Manse in S.C. - "What do they think I am, superman?! I have a wife and family and 4-5+ story arcs to sustain, sheesh, give me some breathing room! Sorry, oh mighty author, but I join with UFK in desiring to hold your feet to this fire! You got a year late because of family requirements BUT you have no one to blame but yourself! Write this well and we want MORE! -----
What say you, my peers? |

I suppose it depends on how early in the year the church capitulates or goes broke.
Truthfully I could see concluding the war in the next book in an acceptable fashion without having to rush too hard, with the seeds sown for the impending Great Reveal™ for the book after. Depending on how RFC wants to run it out, and how he decides he wants to handle the sleeper, I'd say three, possibly four books for the current arc, then off to the Gbaba. I'm particularly interested in that part, because RFC said he wanted to get into how they came to be the stagnant, genocidal horde we all know and love. Thanks for the link, Pokermind.

I can easily see a wrap. The foreshadowing in this book was pretty blatant as is, with CoGA characters left and right warning how close they are to losing the jihad, and with Duchairn warning how little money the Church has left. The MWW has set this situation up to where it's pretty much just Clinton pushing it at this point. He's Oscar St. Just right now, and the situation can be changed in Safehold just like DoP changed it in AoV, with one Puls... err... Pistol shot. I think that's why Harchong has been built up... they're going to stabilize the front with a million well-armed men, just as the Church runs out of money and Magwire pulls a Theisman. The newly Clinton-less Church negotiates a cease-fire with the lines as they currently are, and RFC is free to jump ahead 20 years to the Return and Reveal. I could be (and very likely am) totally wrong, but it would work. It's hard to see an outright military resolution in one more book, unless the Mad Wizard sets up the newly armed and trained Harchongian serf horde to get fed up with their noble commanders and turn around re-create the French Revolution, but with a lot more blood. Either way, the next book is going to be big.. possibly the key book of the series. I don't care if it hasn't been written yet... bring on the snippets! |

SPOILER Morale is definitely cracking. Once morale breaks, a fall can be quite quick. |

Yup. I think 3 things need to happen in a fairly short time frame. Kill Clyntahn (somebody's going to cap him- whether it's Caleb, Avah, one of the Go4, or Raynno is the $64,000 question), rout the Harchongese, and take out their last navy. Have that happen in rapid succession and the thing will fall to pieces. There's no money to build another army in the Temple Lands. There's no arms to arm another army in the Temple Lands or anywhere else. They are shipping the new arms to the front line formations pretty much as soon as they can make it, so there's no reserve. Where are they going to get another couple hundred thousand rifles and the corresponding artillery even if they can raise and train (and house and clothe and feed) the men? There's 3 major allies to the Temple Lands (secular) left- the Harchongese are already in the field and the other two couldn't field a decent force (much less a real field army) if you combine them- and they have to worry about Hanth, who basically sitting in their own front yard, so I don't see either one letting what little land power they have left even stick a toe over their borders. The Dolharians had, what, maybe 40K troops make it home? The other guys (Defelkians or whatever) didn't get more than a tithe of that back. Those are broken formations and useless in the field. I'm not sure I'd trust most of them to even be training cadre after the 'scare' that was put into them. If the timing's right, there would be no time to recruit and train one either. If they break what's in the field now in the spring, it could become a foot race to Zion. But then again, I've been wrong a whole lot more than I've been right when it comes to what's happening next. |
