It would indeed be smart of him to stick with "the intruder knocked me out and my memory is not clear". It's quite a chance for Merlin to take, though.

Or, "I engaged Mab in one on one combat and he completely demolished me. I don't know why I'm still alive!"

Which has the virtue of being completely honest.

So everyone seems enthralled by the final scene in HFQ - the meeting between Merlin and Thirsk and what it means...

I confess some interest as well, but I'm far more interested in Sir Dunkyn Yairley and why he took his squadron and camped out on Shyan Island in the mouth of Saram Bay...

Lots of things come to mind when I read that chapter. Some of them are driven by the thoughts and discussions in the chapter. But I also look at the big Safehold map and see that while Claw Island is large and well placed out in the Sea of Harchong, Saram Bay is about 1,500 miles northeast... well into the Gulf of Dohlar...

The island isn't at a chokepoint, has no good anchorage, and no good water supply. It has "...absolutely no strategic or tactical value..."

Hmmm

Perhaps, in addition to getting the special orders from Sharleyan, Yairley got some other "guidance" about setting up some sort of advanced base - perhaps as a coaling station?? - deep into the Gulf of Dohlar. The textev don't say...

Me? I'll bet they're getting ready for the arrival of some Haaralds... Or maybe some of the coastal ironclads...

What say you my friends?

I was just thinking of some additional speculation on the character parts or some sort of information would be revealed from the journal that would need to be discussed in this book.

I agree. The demon defeated seijin Kohdy, and convinced him he was fighting on the wrong side. It's most probable that the seijin wrote the arguments that the demon used in his journal. Merlin must have translated those parts of the journal. After all, that was the whose purpose of Merlin and Aivah's trip to the tomb of Seijin Kohdy. Yet we didn't learn any of that.

Furthermore, something that seijin Kohdy knew was a danger to the archangels. Else, why kill him?

Is it possible that seijin Kohdy knew something that would be a danger to the archangels, yet he didn't write it down? Not likely, because that was the seijin's reason for writing in Español.

No, I'm convinced that critical information was contained in the journal regarding the War Against the Fallen, and the archangels' weaknesses, and our author is deliberately withholding it from us.

How did the good guys know about a secret meeting of Clyntahn goons? Since Merlin won't risk bugging the Temple, this implies some really good HUMINT.

Aivah Pahrsahn. Clyntahn's goons were being blackmailed, etc. That means they're certainly corrupt, and corrupt clerics are Aivah's specialty. We know (from rfc) that Clyntahn sees any powerful entity not under his control as a threat or potential threat; therefore, once Maigwair became powerful and uncontrolled, he became a threat. Aivah knows enough about church politics and Clyntahn to know that there would come a time that Clyntahn would conspire to destroy Maigwair. She also has enough spys to detect it starting, and, prior to that, to anticipate it. That's why she approached Merlin with her request to travel to and from Zion so quickly. (Actually, the "to" was much more important than the "from.") She had to set up the explosion and carry the explosives.

If I can figure that out then so can the Grand Fornicator.

He already did that once the third vicar was killed.

I wonder if the katyuskas are going to be used against the inquisition in Zion when the GoF cracks.

Clyntahn is now going to think he sees moles everywhere.

Meantime, he'll be right, because he's pushed Rayno for a major rapid manpower increase. That will weaken screening.

McGuiness wrote:Toss in the fact that Clyntahn now sees reality as what he wants it to be, and there's a recipe for complete disaster. I can see him trying to purge the vicarate of anyone he sees as "defeatist," which includes Duchairn and Magwair.

That would seal the fate of the CoGA's armies, as the logistics that support them would completely fall apart, and they'd be torn by internal dissension between those who supported Magwair and are infuriated that their commander was murdered, and those who feel that their duty requires them to continue to fight for Mother Church regardless of who is running it.

So the question for those three members of the Go4 is "Who kills who first?"

Merlin may end up disappointed that he won't have the opportunity to pin Clyntahn to a handy wall with a sword. (Clyntahn is too fat for a midshipman's dirk to do the job.)

Merlin might very well be disappointed. But I have Aivah/Helm Cleaver as the favorites to kill Clyntahn. We should start a pool.

My bet is Major Phandys

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned this but did any one else notice all the textev dropped on how thoroughly the inquisition has control of all armed troops near Zion?

When I see the prisoner caravans returning to the Temple Lands I begin to wonder if they could become a source of troops to back Duchairn/Magwaire? Setup for the inevitable internal confrontation?

Then there's the whole Chisholmian rebellion. I've been waiting for Garvai to drop the hammer on them out of Corisande.

Not Gahrvai. The hammer dropper needs to be Chisholmian.
