Why don't Merlin and Owl have (microscopic?) remote detonators placed in the magazines of all of the forward deployed ships with sensitive technology so that an event like the capture of Dreadnought would be impossible?
Given the...inability to recover information on causes of magazine detonations, it would be incredibly unlikely for any NoG personnel to claim demonic intervention. Especially since any time the remote detonator would likely be necessary would probably involve a boarding action. |

I don't want to point any fingers but.... I think this awful turn got into the the book cuz RFC didn't want to give a certain person more ammunition for complaints about how easy he makes it for the good guys.

I had the same thoughts. Biggest "plot hole" in the book. I think a forced loss is worse then *another win by the good guys.

It's kinda hard at the moment to comlpain about "Mary Sue", isn't it?

That's kinda of how I feel too. I don't like it when bad things happen to the good guys, but after awhile those stories would get pretty boring. I've read a lot of posts where guys complain about Mary Sue, or hand wavem, so it's a little crazy to complain when he writes a situation where the good lose a battle, and doesn't just use magic, tech, whatever, to fix the problem. |

Yeah. I think it's best to let David set the perameters of his own story and lay it out his own way rather than to grump about it. He certainly does a better job than I would, at least. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Most people who complain about "Mary Sue" don't actually understand what a Mary Sue is. Merlin blowing up the ship would not have been Mary Sue. Him not doing so is a jarring, glarring plot hole that ruins suspension of disbelief, which is far worse than any Mary Sue. |

What the OP suggests makes a lot of sense. However, I think that the problem comes when one considers the obvious follow up to it in many readers' minds. Why couldn't Merlin do the same thing for enemy ships, i.e. put microscopic detonators in their magazines (and cause them to explode whenever the enemy ship took a serious hit).
Of course, I suppose that it could look rather suspicious to have so many spectacular magazine explosions on enemy ships. (I can see it now.... the first battle where this would take place would be at a place called Juhtlynd.) |

Leaving the Dreadnought intact in enemy hands plays into the plan to further innovation on Safehold. And when the Haraldh's are ready for deployment the iron-clads will obsolete anyway.

I can't in all honesty agree with this complaint. The good guys have lived and died on the basis of the tech they themselves have developed. Merlin has been there giving hints and prodding, of course. But what was available here were scuttling charges that have to be set by fuses. What that means in this instance is that when this failed, the ship was captured. Could he have told the story your way? Yes. But it would not have been within the normal perameters of how the story is being told. What happened was normal fog of war. Frankly, I think if one is going to grump, it would be more valid to focus on the use of the skimmer to destroy the ship conveying Thirsk's family after the rescue. To be sure it was done in a manner that precluded witnesses, but it was still the use of TF magic beans to ensure a desired result that is so far outside what has been the perameters of the story that it really alters the dynamics of the story itself. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a new perameter or if it remains the exception.
