-----------------Honorverse HIGHER Education---------------------------
=======================================================

It is that time of the year and my mind is on colleges and universities. (My family funds a number of students each year.) I decided to look into higher education in the Honorverse and I was amazed. RFC has all of the bases covered it seems. Cool.

I was wondering if it was accepted and general practice for students to apply for admittance to any school in the Honorverse. Until I remembered that Benjamin Mayhew attended school off planet. I wonder if out-of-state students in the Honorverse pay a higher rate as here on Earth. (Sometimes twice the tuition) Which prompts the same question regarding off-planet rates. Would off-planet rates be even higher or the same as out-of-state, I wonder.

Also, wiki states that Benjamin Mayhew attended school off-planet at the Anderman University and received his Bachelor's degree. I always found it interesting that he elected to attend school on Anderman instead of on Manticore. And since he was intimately familiar with the Andermani why he didn't seek an Alliance with them. However, he became Protector in 1898 and attended the University in 1903. That would have been while the Masadans were still on-planet and if Benjamin would have taken that much time off-planet wouldn't that have been a perfect time to attempt a coup? Hmm

Wiki also states that Benjamin attended a branch of Harvard on Earth for six years in his youth, which should have been his undergrad degree (bachelor's) through Ph.D. Yet he didn't receive his bachelors until later on Anderman. (Unless he flunked a few courses chasing Harvard girls. lol) At any rate, was the six years at Harvard wasted?

I seem to remember that Katherine was very educated as well, even to have received several degrees as Honor considered in textev. But does it state whether she was self-taught or tutored?

I also have to wonder if Haven's students will begin to apply to Manticoran schools in droves, since the education system on Manticore is so much better. Which could quickly over run Manticoran schools.

Does anyone recall if textev gives the University attended by Shannon Foraker?

I wonder what type of studies one majors in at the Palmer Institute.

What is the Honorverse equivalent of West Point?

Edith Mincio was a Manticoran citizen and scholar, and the former tutor for Sir Hakon Nessler, 14th Earl Greatgap.

In the early 1900s PD, she attained a post as a reader in Pre-human Civilizations at Skanderbeg University on Manticore. (HHA1.2: AGT)

What pre-human civilizations are there? The Medusans? And just how is that determined?

I completely forgot that Honor created this in memory of Venizelos. Nice, sorta chokes me up...
The Andreas Venizelos Academy was an orphanage and private school endowed by Lady Honor Harrington for children of Manticoran and Grayson war dead.
Named after Harrington's close friend and associate Andreas Venizelos, who gave his life for the steadholder in the escape from PNS Tepes, it had campuses in both the Star Kingdom and on Grayson. (HH11)

The Royal Manticoran Merchant Marine, or RMMM, comprised most Manticoran merchant ships that transported cargo and people during times of both peace and war.

Freighters travelling under Manticoran flag, like those of Hauptman Lines, were generally part of the RMMM, carrying the prefix RMMS (Royal Merchant Marine Ship). The RMMM's officer were trained at the Merchant Fleet Academy. (HH6, HHA4.2: WOS)

Was the Hauptman ship that was short stopped on Basilisk Station of RMMN registry? Surely not, or Honor wouldn't have searched it. No?

Notable Universities

A university was an institution of higher education and research, which granted academic degrees in a variety of subjects, providing both undergraduate education and postgraduate education. Universities were still the main means of higher education in the Post Diaspora era.

The word university derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars".

Anderman University
Grendel University
Harvard University
Johns Hopkins University
Mannheim University
Rousseau Planetary University
Semmelweiss University
Skanderbeg University

Anderman University was an institute of higher learning on the planet Potsdam in the Anderman Empire.
Prior to 1903 PD, Michael Mayhew of Grayson graduated the university with a bachelor's degree. (HH2)

The Merchant Fleet Academy was the Manticoran academy where the officers of the Royal Manticoran Merchant Marine were trained. (HHA4.2: WOS)

Ignaz Semmelweis University of Beowulf, commonly called Semmelweis University, was a medical school in the city of Grendel on the planet Beowulf, considered by many to be the finest such school in the explored universe.

It was named for Ignaz Semmelweis, a pre-Diaspora pioneer of antiseptic procedures. Its on-campus teaching hospital used the colors of the school on its ambulances.

Alfred Harrington and Allison Chou met there while Harrington was attending on an RMN scholarship. (HH7)

The University of Columbia was a school of higher learning in the Beowulfan capital city of Columbia.
Jukka Longacre served as chairman of its Interstellar Politics department until he was elected to the Planetary Board of Directors in 1915 PD. (HH13)

Harvard University was an institute of higher learning on the planet Earth, one of its most prestigious, and among its oldest (founded 1646 CE), and named after a minister in the then new colony of Massachusetts in North America.

By Honor Harrington's time, the University had several campuses in widely separated locations. Benjamin Mayhew IX of Grayson attended the campus in Bogota for six years. (HH2)

The Palmer Foundation was a conservative political organization in the Star Kingdom of Manticore.
Jeremiah Crichton worked as a military analyst for the foundation. (HH4)

It likely had a connection to the Palmer Institute.[/quote]

The College of Criminology was one of the professional graduate schools of Landing University of Manticore.

Dr. Mordecai Flouret served as its chairman in the early 1520s PD. Stephanie Harrington and Karl Zivonik attended some of its courses as part of their advanced SFS ranger training. (SK3)

The Royal Manticoran Naval Academy, also known as the Saganami Island Academy, was the Royal Manticoran Navy's officer school, located on Saganami Island on the planet Manticore.

The commander of the RMNA was the Commandant, who usually presented the Last View Address to graduates.

History
The RMNA was created some time after the founding of the Star Kingdom of Manticore, and fell under the authority of the Bureau of Training (BuTrain), and the Sixth Space Lord. (HH9)

The first class of midshipmen entered around 1505 PD and graduated around 1509 PD.[1]

A Manticore Merchant Marine Academy would generally train civilians for the Merchant Service as places such as Kings Point - The U S Merchant Marine Acamey(in New York) does today. On the other hand, a lot of former - mostly retired for one reason or another- RMN officers and enlisted are shown as having moved over to the MMM once their service with RMN ended. We have more than a few times have been shown people in the Manticore merchant marine who were recalled to active duty during the war with Haven or who were mentioned as retired RMN now serving on merchant ships, often as owners or officers.

That is not to say that there is not a lot of learning needed to shift from the RMN to a merchant career. There is a whole other bunch of still sets needed including actual business experience, new equipment (or new to the transferee). MMA grads are commissioned as reserve officers in the Navy.

Focusing on just part of your monster post. :)
Since I didn't recall anything about Benjamin Mayhew IX attending an Andermani University I double checked the wiki and I don't see that detail (and the page doensn't appear to have been updated recently).

And 1903 PD makes no sense for him to head off for higher education. Not only was he already the Protector, but there's not really room in the timeline for it to happen. HotQ happened in 1903, and he's on Grayson in 1905 at the start of the Haven-Manticore war.

However I went on to do a text search for "Anderman University" and found a couple references[1] - but they're for his younger brother Michael Mayhew. But even that was before 1903 PD, because he's introduced to Honor, when she shows up for the unexpectedly exciting family dinner, as having that bachelor's degree; but hoping to pursue graduate work on Manticore.

So my confusion appears resolved.

One was in Michael Mayhew's Bio blurb in House of Steel, and the other was in Honor of the Queen in the aforementioned dinner/coup attempt scene.

Doh! Thanks Johnathan. I misread that. It is why I included such a lengthy post as reference, because I couldn't figure out what was going on. I knew someone would. Again, thanks. Shortened and corrected...

Cthia, re the merchant marine topic, I'm not sure whether it is still the same, but until a few years ago ALL private cargo ships that were registered in South Africa flew the South African Merchant Marine flag. The government did not own or operate any of those ships; they were all privately owned and operated. Basically, the SAMM designation was simply a way of indicating the country of registry, so I suspect that might be the case with the RMMM.

Pre-human studies would be xenopaleontology and xenoarcheology, from the name. That is, the name suggests the study of extinct alien civilizations on planets now inhabited or explored by humans. So the Medusans wouldn't count.

Makes sense. And back to Cthia's original thoughts on that, I'm not sure why a nation's warship wouldn't be allowed to inspect it's own flagged merchant ships.

I thought the current Earth rules were you could inspect ships flagged by your country anywhere on the oceans, and ships flagged by any country within your territorial waters. So on both counts Honor appears to have had a perfect right to inspect the Hauptman freighter; whether or not it carried the RMMS designation.

(In a more direct comparison I'm pretty sure that ships bearing the 'RMS' Royal Mail Ship prefix weren't exempt from Royal Navy inspections)

I imagine that Semmelweis University, the school of medicine that Allison attended, is inundated with applicants all over the galaxy.

A thought occurred to me. I wonder what happened to all of the off-planet students all over the Honorverse after Case Lacoon. Are they stuck? Do they have to withdraw? Wasted semesters? Wasted time? And I thought I had problems with red-tape at Uni.

I thought Benjamin spent 6 years at Harvard University (at a non-Earth campus) while Michael went to Anderman University for a bachelors. My bet would be that Benjamin holds a bachelors degree and likely a masters degree, probably in Poli Sci. Benjamin theoretically could have gotten his Ph.D. after spending 6 years at Harvard, but I think the BA + MS is more likely.

In the case of students 'stranded' by Case Lacoon, I would imagine that the Diplomatic Corps would make arrangements to transfer Manticoran Nationals either offworld or to the safety of the local embassy.

Those who chose to return home(or were asked to come home by their families) would likely be allowed transfer credits to the Manticoran Higher Institution of their choice.

The students doing studies on Earth would be in the toughest bind politically, given the rise in anti-manticoran sentiment.

Most students I suspect are on worlds like Beowulf, which has always been friendly to Manticore.
