That's one possible reason for Rayno go turn on Clyntahn.

I never said that Rayno was part of Helm Cleaver for a significant period of time. I simply noticed that he is the one character that we haven't gotten ANY internal thoughts about except what he felt about Clyntahn. Except for accepting his letter from the Fist of God, he has only been seen executing Clyntahn's directives. All this is strange to me. The analyst in me is piecing together possible reasons for it.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the letter was Nynian's acceptance of Rayno's help. For whatever reason he turned coat as a result of the recent events. I think Rayno twigged onto the Inquisitor that escaped with seijin Zhosua. He could have taken him in but did not AND let Helm Cleaver know he could have but didn't. He could have issues with the Camps. He could have issues with seijin returning to kill inquisitors. He could have issues with Clyntahn destroying a nice comfortable world full of graft to take advantage of. He could have been motivated by a host of issues that RFC hasn't included when Rayno is on stage. Heck, outside a reaction to Cllyntahn RFC has included nothing about the man.

In any case, we shall see. I like my chances on this one.

That makes more sense than him being a mole the whole time. I could see that scenario. Nice analysis. Still not sure I agree, but I'll keep it in mind.

My thought here is pretty simple. Having a lunatic running the asylum is dangerous for everybody in close proximity. Rayno is certainly no peach. But he is a rational man with a good grasp on reality.

"Rayno, what are you doing here? This is a Group of Four meeting. Where is the Grand Inquisitor?"
"Gentlemen, it is with a heavy heart that I pass along the news that Vicar Clyntahn has worn himself out in God's service and suffered a breakdown. He is resting comfortably in a quiet Bedardist monastery until he can recover."

What happens now that Merlin has left a credible living witness to what he can do with his governors turned off?

And an ICN Ensign's dirk through his heart to make sure he didn't hurt himself moving around.

Or one would hope.

Actually, killing him off, as good an idea as it may seem, would probably be a bad thing for the war effort. It's the Hitler syndrome. He lives in his own little alternate reality and can't understand why his force of will can't bend the real world to match what he wants to happen. If he left the war fighting to the military, they would be in a better position.

Look at the way he's screwed up the war effort by interfering and going around the military chain of command to issue orders that end up failing disastrously.

He starts an offensive with no long term plans or real preparations for executing it- and kicks it off before even those few plans that have been made could be fully implemented, he orders hopelessly outnumbered, out maneuvered and out classed troops to hold in place against forces that have numerical, technological and tactical superiority, he ignores or dismisses the logistical needs of the troops, ignores or dismisses the financial realities of fighting the way and actively acts against any attempts to improve the weapons in the troops hands. Look at how many innovators and weapons inventors are either being shielded from the Inquisition by others in power or are too busy walking on egg shells to work on any follow up designs.

He may be the best ally Charis has had since they landed on the mainland.

I wonder if there's an anthology in the works. There seemed to be a few points that could easily be picked up and expanded upon into their own shortish stories.

Yeah, the war would have been more difficult without Clyntahn's meddling, that's for sure...but I still think he needs to be sized for a straitjacket...you know, one with a nice snug fit...

Maybe we could get Maigwair and Duchairn to help him into the thing...

If Clyntahn follows that line of reasoning, and he's just the sort who would, then Rayno will need self-defense very soon.
