Cherrybean tea

Quote From HFQ

Ahbaht, like quite a lot of Emeraldians, preferred cherrybean tea, made from the roasted and ground seeds of the cherrybean tree. Kylmahn couldn’t deny that cherrybean did a much better job of keeping him awake than hot chocolate or most of the other teas he’d ever tried, but he really couldn’t understand why Sir Bruhstair and the other cherrybean gourmands liked its taste. Personally, he preferred to bury it under copious quantities of cream and sugar.

…..

Ahbaht tried not to shudder. He’d never understood why so many people insisted on adulterating cherrybean with milk or cream, and—unlike most mariners—he’d never developed a taste for dried milk, anyway.

End Quote

Quote From HFQ Glossary

Cherrybean tea—a “tea” made from the beans (seeds) of the cherrybean tree, especially favored in Emerald and Tarot and a highly esteemed luxury in North Harchong and the Temple Lands, although its expense limits it to a very wealthy group of consumers.

Cherrybean tree—the Safeholdian name for coffee trees. There is only one variety on Safehold, a version of robusta genetically engineered to survive in a wider range of climates. The cherrybean tree is still limited to a fairly narrow belt of equatorial and near equatorial Safehold because of the planet’s lower average temperatures.

End Quote

Earlier people wondered if there was coffee on Safehold. Apparently the MMW decided to answer the question. ;)

By the way, I can never understand why people put cream in coffee. That makes mud.

shrugs

I put milo https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milo_(drink) into my coffee and my parents added condensed milk into theirs. Different strokes for different folks.

Self defense. I don't do it with real coffee, but what passes for it in North America is too dreadful to face without something worth tasting inserted.

I've had coffee (more of an espresso, really) in Turkey, in Ireland, Italy, and Spain. It may be a result of my own heathen upbringing, because as much as I loved coffee everywhere I've ever been, there just isn't anything quite like the coffee mama used to make to help me get through my day without napping or snapping on particularly daft colleagues and co-workers.

I'm a fan of a touch of sugar, and I'm known to add just enough milk to bring the temperature down far enough that I can shoot, not sip, the first half dozen cups or so. That said, I'll be properly grateful no matter how it comes to me.

I'd swear that if my grandfather didn't see it boiling in the cup when it first got to him, he'd complain that it was cold lol.

Civilised people put MILK in their coffee, unlike you Americans, and we don't do whatever you do to decent coffee to make it so bad in the first place, whether or not you wish to corrupt it further.

Yes, I'm back! Finished reading HFQ this morning. It will be a few days before I've caught up on the posts here, though. I have a little list of "errata".

Back when Dad and I used to work in the same factory he would buy a cup of coffee from a vending machine and then immediately place it into the microwave. He nuked it long enough to get it to boil, and only then would sip it, carefully.

It's a good thing for Stella Liebeck's sake that I wasn't on her jury. The only way I would have voted McDonald's guilty is had they heated their coffee under pressure.

Being that Mom and Dad are both coffee drinkers, it's a mystery why I never picked the habit up.

I take mine with cream and artificial sweetener, but that's just me. everybody has their own preferences.
