As a young sprout, I practiced with a sling and could hit a dog/cat sized moving target at a hundred yards or so. This was at an age of nine or ten, so a hundred yards was about my limit; my sling was fairly short and I wasn't all that strong.

I think an experienced slinger could match my accuracy at much longer ranges, given an adult-sized sling and sling bullets instead of random rocks a dirt clods.

This would depend on many things, including the motivation of who exactly is doing the killing.

That said, I suspect the 2 most likely perps resorting to removing someone else are either Traynir or Clyntahn. While one might suppose Clyntahn has the upper hand in the GO4 due to his control of the Inquisition, the wild card is that Traynir controls the Grand Vicar. If the Grand Vicar called for Clyntahn's removal, it would almost certainly fracture the Inquistion; and lead to some sort of civil war within the Church's hierarchy. Who would win is unknown without actually trying it; since it would depend on who supported whom, which could change from day to day depending on the circumstances at the particular time.

Similarly, Clyntahn would have problems initiating something overt against the Chancellor, for the same reason.

Duchairn at the moment is too valuable, since at this point the war is likely to be won or lost on the AOG's side by finances, more than on the side of Charis. Charis has the gold and silver on Silverlode they can use to finance the war effort, if necessary, since it belongs to the imperial family in toto.

That would tend to leave Maigwair as a possible scapegoat, especially if the AOG has more, significant reversals on the front.

Now, this is all as far as some *open* elimination goes. If one considers a quiet assassination, then, obviously, pretty much any one of them could be eliminated. The question is just how much effort and risk one is willing to make/take. Clyntahn and Traynir almost never seem to leave the Temple itself, so it would be hard to arrange anything that looked like a real accident. If that's not a requirement, however, there are all kinds of possibilities. Poison, a servant sneaking in a IED, even a paralytic agent that would allow a weaker servant to strangle a more athletic opponent. Many possibilities. Don't forget the assassins already in Zion, either.

If it is Duchairn, suffice it to say that, even from my current location, RFC will hear the screaming in South Carolina.

It's noteworthy that we're taking for granted that at least two of them will die violently (thread title is "killed first").

There's no lasting peace with them in power, of course, and taking them alive is the opposite of guaranteed.

While I agree with this, I'm not at all convinced that Clyntahn does.

He doesn't appear to have completely grasped the connections between pay, food purchases and worker productivity. Given that his minions in northern Siddarmark have been busy providing counter-examples, he's probably more convinced than ever that finance is just another word for pandering to those whose commitment to the Jihad is weak.

I think he understands the connection well enough; he simply doesn't care. In his mind, ALL that matters is the Church's, and by that he means HIS continued and exclusive grip on power. It's not even a case of concerns such as feeding the Church's soldiers being secondary in his mind; he truly doesn't believe that anything else matters at all. He truly believes that the Church's soldiers, artisans and everyone else who are necessary to the Church's war effort should be concerned only about the Church's victory, and that any inclination to worry about such mundane issues as feeding themselves or their families are an indication of a less than complete dedication to that aim and there for a sign of heresy. At the moment he is indulging Maigwair and Duchairn, but as soon as it becomes clear that despite their efforts the Church's forces have been irretrievably pushed into retreat, his indulgence will come to a rather abrupt end. At least, that's how I read the man's personality and likely reaction to news of the impending disaster.

spoiler warning

well Dunchairn survived this book, though it was close a couple of times.

I'm really not seeing him surviving another one if Clynthan lives much longer

STILL SPOILER

He probably knows it, too.

If he got a look at the casualty list from the dismantling of Second Pasquale - which I would lay odds he has - he's sure of it, and probably has a pretty good idea who was on the agenda of that meeting.

Clyntahn doesn't survive the next book. The open question is whether Duchairn takes him out, goes down swinging, or both.
