RFC said that Beowulf would lose about 10,000,000 in the forthcoming book.
My thought is, does Beowulf have such a large number of people working in the orbital stations that 10,000,000 could be killed without and Erdani Edict violation? IIRC Manticore lost around 5,000,000 from their orbital stations as a result of the Yawata strike. .

Did he specifically say that the casualties stem from the orbital works?

I don't think so, but seeing as Beowulf is such a long established system and would probably have a lot of orbital works I just wondered if there would be sufficient numbers in orbit to make up that number without and actual Eridani Edict violation. I suppose that it could be a mixture of orbital and planet based casualties, the cities on Beowulf would be quite densely populated,(hence the birth restrictions in place), and there could be a lot more of the ""accidental"" strikes which are not counted as Eridani Edict violations killing larger numbers of the planet based population. .

Recall that the chances of enforcing the Eridani Edict against the SL itself are effectively nill.
I suspect the the casualties on Beowulf will stem from the attempt to seize the system and will be a combination of orbital and at least one missile impacting the planet. It would prove embarrassing to the SLN to not have taken the precautions called for in the Edict, and even might set up the next book drawing this phase of the conflict to a close. However, I dont see true enforcement as an option. |

Manticore had three massive manufacturing centers and lost them in a surprise attack nobody was expecting. Granted, Weyland's casualties were lower as they were undergoing an evacuation drill. That still left the largest two fully populated. I do not think Beowulf has twice as large a spaceborne infrastructure. I don't even think it has one even a fifth as large! Even if it did, the GA is on full alert and expecting an intrusion into that system some time very soon. I would bet that the GA terminus guard force is primed to move insystem or perform microjumps, with a ton of reinforcements stationed on top of the MWJ. I don't think a non-stealth attacker would have the time to range upon ten million people worth of space stations and methodically destroy them all, given that they would be defended and have time to evacuate. So unfortunately, it does seem like the only way to kill that many Beowulfans is with a planetary strike, whether accidental or intended. My bet would be on the MAlign sabotaging the SLN again. |

I am pretty sure that the Alignment is going to have its hands in this, likely using the planned SLN move against Beowulf as a cover for them to actually strike at their most hated opponent. They are not likely to go completely over the top and try to outright destroy or sterilize the planet, but they will probably use a combination of Oyster Bay tactics and nano-tech manipulations to make sure that an Edict violating event happens.
Something like making sure the the SLN fleet gets there soon before Manticore can put their defenses (Mycroft and its pods) fully into place. Then ensure the fleet moves on the planet and gets into range. Then either fire off the League ships pods like they did in 2nd Manticore, or slip some of their spider fleets in to fire from stealth on critical targets, or a combination of both. Result, orbital infrastructure and some shipping in the area gets destroyed, with plenty of fallout to hit the planet along with one or two "accidental" missile hits on major cities. They then use the disasters outfall to encourage the leagues breakup by using their co-opted spokes people and planted agents to make the SLN out to actually be a genuine bad guy. "Do you want to live in the SLN, when THIS is what they do to you if you try to leave?" "Can you put your trust in the SLN to defend you when its forces open fire on civilian targets without warning?" "They do this sort of thing on the Frontiers to Neo-Barbs you'know, now they will do it to Core worlds!" |

It's easy enough to install code in a given missile, compared to installing a bomb in the CO's bridge.

But it would make for good reading. As for enforcement? No. but as for war crimes, that too should make for good reading especially for certain members of the SL when they realize the very real possibility of facing a war crimes tribunal; embarrassment will be the least of their concerns then. |

Duckk; since I was the source for this (from the MWW's comments at Libertycon earlier this year), I'll answer (since this thread is properly marked for spoilers), that he did not indicate where the casualities would come from, just that he was going to kill 10 million Beowulfians and had considered and then dropped (as of the Con--things can change) the idea of killing 'Uncle Jacques', figuring if Honor isn't pissed off at the MAlignment now, nothing else is likely to increase her ire. So no idea how or when it is to be done. And the MWW of course could decide not to do it at all, which would be just like an author... ***********************************************

From the books, the mandarin plan is likely to be going after the planet while it is at its furthest from the terminus, so lessen the chance of alliance interference. The thing is major fleet movements in hyper are detectable. Do we think Beowolf would receive one of those system defense network? They are likely up grading LACs, which are now capable of causing damage.. Even if it is just haven tech transfer of material, they would have had before the failure of the league assault and the collective available shipping of manticore.
Also, Mesa need not sneak in devices to mess with tech, they are the ones who produced the league only long distance missiles. I wonder if a spider or streak drive ship in the recinity, to merely observe or possibly actively intervene. If it could be captured it could be useful, to examine enemy tech, and their computers would be a valuable source of intelligence. |
