I haven't seen nearly enough to be clear on what happens.

I got a hint that the plan might, in fact, be not mercy killing but actual rescue. However, that's not based on anything remotely like a statement in the text, and frankly I don't see how it could be pulled off. There are, however, a couple of new players in a position to set something appropriate up. Or maybe not - so far it's a thing of rags and patches. Fun though, and 2 weeks 'til we can fill in the blanks.

Meanwhile, I might see what comes up via some of the other names associated with the situation.

I'm making the assumption that there's no way for the Charisian Navy to catch those transports and stop them. I'm also projecting that Merlin is getting angrier at his inability to stop the atrocities and will start doing more when he can.

Of course, aiding Hector in making an escape by sinking a pursuer would be another, but my bet is on sinking POW transports.

SPOILER!!!

dobriennm wrote:Actually, yes, the Inner Circle all had a discussion about doing that, but decided not to based on revealing too much and the chance of detection from orbit close to the Temple.

Maybe this time they are far enough away that is not as much a concern AND having seen the results the first time they are too pissed off to allow it to happen a second time.

As for Thirsk, I read a lot in the Characters section, but couldn't make up my mind whether his family actually got out or not and didn't see enough evidence to say Thirsk lived or died (though the author seems to have strongly stated he was going to die - see snippet index). I do think Hector does try to rescue them, but not clear if he succeeded.

I have found that by going back and forth from the "surprise me!" one can see most of the book, by going backwards and forwards. The answers to your questions are in there, I read them last night, it just takes numerous "surprise me's" and careful notation of the page number to get to them.

For example, the events prior to the cover picture are in there and both Nimue and Merlin are involved!! i.e. note the weapon Nimue has on her back... Great segment!

I kinda hope something is done about the POWs, I'd really hate for them to end up in Zion.

I did do a search on POWs and on Kaudzhu and Clyntahn and Rayno do apparently have a big discussion about the "victory" at Kaudzhu Narrows.

But after my last speculation failed due to not taking pains to read enough fragments, I think I'll leave off further premature speculation

From my own gleanings I have 3-4 things to add on this...

1 Charisian fleet
2 po'ed captain of a prison vessel
3 Schulerite
4 hand grenade

I wasn't able to discover if the grenade was actually used

Spoiler.

I've got my copy of HFQ.

If you don't want to know, stop reading.

The cover is amazingly accurate. It seems to me that some of the prior book covers have not been. But this one gets it (mostly) right. Near the end of HFQ, Merlin and Nimue both board the ship carrying Thirsk's family off to Zion under the cover of night. They blast their way through the crew and Temple guardsmen using the newly invented 10-gauge pump shotguns. They take Thirsk's family off onto a small fishing vessel they brought along. Then to cover the escape the recon skimmer destroys the NOG galleon.

This is what the cover shows. My only complaint is that the cover seems to show the skimmer using an energy weapon. But the text says the skimmer drops a 500 pound bomb on the ship because they were concerned that using energy weapons would trigger the bombardment systerm

Hmmm... I had my hands on a copy, but forgot to take a close look at the cover. Is that ship actually flying the EoC's colours, which is what the on-line version appears to show?

If so, then it's actually just a tad misleading - I had it pegged as quite a different scenario, based on that.

Personally, I think it's flying a skull and crossbones, but I'd be wrong, especially since I know what flag it is flying but since I promised not to post any spoilers for 2 weeks, I ain't telling. OTOH, someone else already posted the correct answer.

Where's the fun in a promise like that? ;) By all means, clearly mark your posts as spoilers so the unfortunate souls who have not yet gotten their hands on the book can stop reading if they wish. But other than that, I figure everything is fair game. We have been speculating and guessing for months. But now we *KNOW*. :D

Destroying a ship captured at Kaudzhu, possibly with prisoners on board.

Prizes typically sailed with your colours hoisted above the enemy's, at least until they were taken into your own service. That was the only plausible explanation I could ever find for the apparent high-tech attack on a Charisian ship, and the bits I was able to extract from Look Inside make it plausible.
