Isn't one of Elizabeth's titles 'Duchess of Winston'? Same thing...

Nope. The only lesser title QEIII has that is a Duchy is the Grand Duchy of Basilisk.

I'm pretty sure of it. Textev I cannot give, because I don't have any of the books available, but I distinctly remember it being one of titles mentioned along with a whole list of others when she arrived on Honor's flagship to meet with Pritchard - or maybe it was elsewhere...

Probably the bit hanuman is referring to.

Duchess of Winston? Does she smoke cigarettes?

Boldface is my emphasis.

Thanks for the tested. My memory seems to be faulty.

BTW, I absolutely detest autocorrecting virtual keyboards. I usually double check for that kind of thing, but it slipped past me...

And those who do notice, tend to slap some sense into the complaining protocol specialists, that a Steading considerably outranks a mere duchy.

What is it again, there's only three people, outside of Elizabeth herself, that any Steadholder is considered on par with, for protocol rank. And that'd be the Grand Duke/Duchess of Manticore, Sphinx and Gryphon... and presumably the Grand Duke of San Martin (whenever they get around to making 'proper' nobility there).

Steading also being a complete sovereign ruler in addition... nope, can't really see any protocol specialists complaints gaining any traction. And since the title is hereditary (along with the Steading), and both titles will just about always follow to the same person...

Add to that the fact that everyone should be used to hearing the title 'Steadholder Harrington' by now, so 'Duchess Harrington' wouldn't even sound strange any more.

Yet protocolists will keep protesting, because the more the situation continues, the bigger the mess in the records. And I can see how this might lead to ugly legalese, sort of like the unfortunate FYROM, which has been stuck with its temporary name for twenty years.

My question is how does the Crown define the "landless lords".For exmaple, does a person who gets a grant to some of the broadcast spectrum become the "Earl of Landing City Telecom"?

IIRC the decendants to peopel who got exclusively "landless" lands (HD spectrum, mineral rights to parts of the asteroid belt, etc) tend to pick up (marry into) actual landed titles for the prestige value.

And the earlier Aristocrats, if they took spectrum or rights, were likely to take it in combination with a small named parcel of land. So they'd have physical land at least large enough for a residence befitting their rank/stature while the bulk of the "estate" was the more virtual "lands".

But if you did get a pure "virtual" estate I'd hope that you'd be allowed to work with the Crown to decide on a suitable name for your virtual "lands". I'd guess it wouldn't be "Landing City Telecom" since the Telecom company wouldn't be founded yet when the spectrum was originally granted. And presumably you aren't stuck with "Earl of 88-90 Mhz" - so a pure spectrum allocation seems like an ideal place to come up with an interesting (but acceptable) name for your title.
